Administrators who The Board recognizes that a superior educational system and a program of instruction that meets the needs of all students can only be achieved by providing for continual improvement of the professional staff. Sabbatical leave is given to professional personnel to permit them to improve their ability to render educational service. Such improvement is usually achieved by formal study, research and/or writing and travel. Applications for sabbatical leave for other types of experiences shall be considered on their merits and may be approved by the Board upon the recommendation of the Superintendent. a. A certificated/licensed employee may apply for sabbatical leave subject to the following conditions and requirements: 1. Applicant must have been employed in the Okemos Public Schools for seven (7) consecutive years of satisfactory service as a full- time employee in the Shaker Heights City School District. Military leaves shall not be interpreted as interrupted service. 2. Subsequent sabbatical leaves may be authorized after eligibility has been reestablished by service of an additional seven (7) consecutive years of satisfactory service as a full-time employee. 3. A maximum of two percent (2%) of the professional employees may be granted a sabbatical leave upon request. The compensation of the staff member on sabbatical leave shall be half the salary he/she would receive if on active staff status for the period in which the leave is effective. 2. A staff member on sabbatical leave shall be considered to be in the employ of the Board, shall have a contract and shall be entitled to participate in any benefits that may be mutually agreed upon provided for by the individual rules and the Board at the time regulations of leave approval. Sabbatical Leave. Furnishes an indemnity bond satisfactory to the District to cover a bonding period from the beginning date of the sabbatical leave to the end of the post-sabbatical service requirement; and g. Reimburses the District for all sabbatical salary and benefits received in the event of non-compliance with any of the sabbatical leave regulations except for reason of death or physical or mental disability. 9.1 Sabbatical leave applications shall be filed by April 15. Such interruption shall not affect the amount of compensation to be paid such employee under the terms of the sabbatical leave agreement, provided notification of illness or injury verifying the interruption of the program due to serious injury or illness is submitted by registered or certified mail at the time of illness/injury, or as soon as possible thereafter, to the appropriate assignment office. A sabbatical leave may not be changed to an illness leave before the expiration date of the sabbatical leave. 9.3 A sabbatical leave may be cancelled prior to the effective date of the leave and converted to a resignation, return to duty, or other type of leave if approved by the assignment office. Such request must be submitted in writing. After the sabbatical leave commences, it may be converted or reduced to another type of leave other than illness or other paid leave, and sabbatical salary received may have to be refunded. An employee who is unable to complete sabbatical leave requirements, due to causes deemed by the Human Resources Division to be beyond the employee’s control, may receive compensation on a prorated basis. Sabbatical Leave. Administrators who have Eligibility for Sabbatical Leave A faculty member appointed at .5 FTE or more, with the rank of Senior Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor may be considered for sabbatical leave: After having been employed continuously appointed without interruption by a sabbatical leave for 18 academic quarters (excluding Summer Session) or, in the Okemos Public Schools case of 12-month faculty, 72 months; or After having accumulated the equivalent of 6.0 FTE years over an indefinite period of 9-month or 12-month appointments uninterrupted by a sabbatical leave. Prior service at the ranks of Instructor, Lecturer or Research Assistant, when leading to a promotion to a higher rank, may be considered by an institution president as part of the period of accumulated service for seven the purposes of the time requirement for sabbatical eligibility. A series of appointments shall be considered continuous whether or not interrupted by one or more authorized leaves of absence other than a sabbatical leave. A one-year period of appointment at less than .5 FTE will count as a period of accumulated service for purposes of the time requirement for sabbatical eligibility. Xxxxxx received by an academic staff member during a sabbatical shall be calculated as follows: Salary under subsection (1)(a) of this rule shall be a percentage (determined by OAR 580-021-0225 or 580-021-0230) of the academic staff member’s annual rate multiplied by the average FTE at which the academic staff member was appointed during the 6.0 FTE years immediately prior to the sabbatical leave. The president shall have the authority and discretion to interpret special circumstances in this regard. For purposes of this subsection, eligibility years are the 18 academic quarters (excluding Summer Session) or in the case of 12-month faculty, 72 months of continuous employment at half-time or more that result in the academic staff member’s eligibility for sabbatical leave under subsection (1)(a) of this rule. Salary under subsection (1)(b) of this rule shall be a percentage (determined by OAR 580-021-0225 or 580-021-0230) of the academic staff member’s annual rate in effect at the time the sabbatical leave begins. Sabbatical Leave. Sabbatical Leave. Sabbatical Leave. Administrators A member of the bargaining unit who have been employed in the Okemos Public Schools has an earned master's degree may be eligible for a year of sabbatical leave after seven (7) consecutive years of service in the Xxx Xxxx Public Schools, subject to the rules and conditions of Section 380.1235 of the State Code (1976). A teacher on a sabbatical leave shall be compensated at fifty five percent (55%) of the salary he/she would have received if he/she had been on active service in the Xxx Xxxx Public Schools. Sabbatical Leave. Administrators The Board of Education may, upon recommendation of the Superintendent, grant a sabbatical leave to the administrator who have been employed in the Okemos Public Schools for has completed seven (7) consecutive years of service in the school district. Sabbatical Leave. Administrators The District may grant a leave of absence for study and travel (sabbatical) to any regular, full-time faculty member who has rendered satisfactory service to the District for at least six consecutive years prior to taking the leave, but not more than one such leave of absence shall be granted in each six-year period. Administrators who Desiring to reward professional performance and encourage independent research and achievement, the Board may grant sabbatical leave to teachers, upon recommendation by the Superintendent or his/her designee, for approved scholarly programs whether or not carried on by an academic institution, subject to the following conditions. A. No more than one (1) teacher of the teaching staff shall be absent on sabbatical leave at any one time. B. Request for sabbatical leave must be received by the Superintendent or his/her designee in writing, in such form as may be required by him/her, no later than November 30 of the school year preceding the school year for which the sabbatical leave is requested. In cases of emergency, the Superintendent or his/her designee may waive the above required date. A teacher receiving such leave shall retain all privileges and benefits that he/she would have received had he not been employed in the Okemos Public Schools for on such leave. C. The teacher has completed at least seven (7) consecutive full school years may be granted a of service in the Xxxxxxx School. D. A teacher on sabbatical leave upon request. Administrators must return to service with the Okemos Public Schools immediately upon termination of the sabbatical leave and shall continue service with the Okemos Public Schools for a period of one (1) year, or subject to such conditions as may be mutually agreed upon approved by the individual and the Board at the time of leave approval. If Administrators do not return to the service of the Okemos Public Schools after termination of their sabbatical leave, they must refund in full all compensation received from the Okemos Public Schools while on leave unless they receive a written waiver to the contrary from the Board. An Administrator returning from sabbatical leave must submit a written statement within forty-five (45) calendar days after the conclusion of the leave to the Board of Education indicating the accomplishments achieved during the leave and showing how these accomplishments related to the betterment of the school district. Sabbatical Leave. Administrators who have Eligibility for Sabbatical Leave A faculty member appointed at .5 FTE or more, with the rank of Senior Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor may be considered for sabbatical leave: After having been employed continuously appointed without interruption by a sabbatical leave for 18 academic quarters (excluding Summer Session) or, in the Okemos Public Schools case of 12-month faculty, 72 months; or After having accumulated the equivalent of 6.0 FTE years over an indefinite period of 9-month or 12-month appointments uninterrupted by a sabbatical leave. Prior service at the ranks of Instructor, Lecturer or Research Assistant, when leading to a promotion to a higher rank, may be considered by an institution president as part of the period of accumulated service for seven the purposes of the time requirement for sabbatical eligibility. A series of appointments shall be considered continuous whether or not interrupted by one or more authorized leaves of absence other than a sabbatical leave. The president shall have the authority and discretion to interpret special circumstances in this regard. For purposes of this subsection, eligibility years are the 18 academic quarters (excluding Summer Session) or in the case of 12-month faculty, 72 months of continuous employment at half-time or more that result in the academic staff member’s eligibility for sabbatical leave under subsection (1)(a) of this rule. Salary under subsection (1)(b) of this rule shall be a percentage (determined by OAR 580-021-0225 or 580-021-0230) of the academic staff member’s annual rate in effect at the time the sabbatical leave begins. If during the period of sabbatical leave the institution allocates salary increases to its academic staff members, the annual rate of the academic staff member on sabbatical leave will be counted as active service increased by the appropriate amount effective on the date that the salary increase was granted. Sabbatical leaves are granted for purposes of research, writing, creative activities, advanced study, travel undertaken for observation and study of conditions in our own or in other countries affecting the Okemos School Districtapplicant’s field or related scholarly or professional activities.
