SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES Sample Clauses

SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES. During the 2014-2015 reporting period several staffing changes within the groups and regions responsible for land management activities have occurred. Both Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxx and Dr. Xxxxxxx Xxxxx accepted new positions within the department and both Heritage Preserve Manager positions were filled. Xxxxx “Trapper” Xxxxxx accepted the Heritage preserve Manager for Xxxxxxx Sand Ridge Heritage Preserve (TSRHP), and Xxxxx Xxxxxx accepted a promotion to Heritage Preserve Manager at Aiken Gopher Tortoise Heritage Preserve (AGTHP). Both have previous longleaf pine habitat management experience and will continue efforts at their respective preserves to maintain and restore gopher tortoise habitat, and to secure the persistence of this species in South Carolina. Land management activities at both Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxx Heritage Preserve (TSRHP) and Aiken Gopher Tortoise Heritage Preserve (AGTHP) have continued, and population augmentation and enhancement activities, using waif tortoises have continued at Aiken Gopher Tortoise Heritage Preserve. To date, 238 individual tortoises have been reintroduced to the AGTHP landscape (127 adults, 45 juveniles and 66 hatchlings/yearlings). Nest searches on site, reveled signs of reproduction, and 7 nests were dug resulting in 32 eggs. The 30 hatchlings from this work will be released in spring 2016. SREL staff provided two papers from work conducted at AGTHP titled, 1) Gopher Tortoise Dispersal and Home Range Establishment following Penning: Implications for Translocations and 2) Use of Waifs as a Means to Restore Population Viability of Gopher Tortoises at the AGTHP, South Carolina. Additionally the Memoranda of Understanding with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was renewed and extended, allowing SCDNR to receive additional waif tortoises for the AGTHP. SCDNR has secured funding to perform Line Transect Distance Sampling (LTDS) at gopher tortoise sites within South Carolina for the first time since the late 1970’s. During the reporting period we have purchased and tested all equipment and performed LTDS at TSRHP. Results from this work will be available in the next annual report as well as a report on the status of other gopher tortoise sites in the state. We have hired a survey crew to perform the studies and will begin in January 2016. SCDNR representative Xxxx Xxxxxxx participated in the annual Gopher Tortoise CCA meeting in Daphne, AL and the annual Gopher Tortoise Council meeting in Xxxxxxxxx, LA.

SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES. The gopher tortoise is listed by the state of South Carolina as a critically endangered species within the state of South Carolina. This state designation requires that the federal ESA is observed in reference to gopher tortoise, meaning it is unlawful for any person to take, possess, transport, export, process, sell or offer for sale or shipment, and for any common or contract carrier knowingly to transport or receive for shipment any species or subspecies of wildlife that is endangered within the state. Very few tortoises reside in South Carolina, but known populations are protected on wildlife management areas, where it is illegal to take tortoises without written permission from the Department of Natural Resources (Wildlife Management Area Regulation 11.1).
SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES. South Carolina has designated the gopher tortoise as an endangered species within the state. Few tortoises remain in South Carolina, but the state continues to conduct habitat protection efforts in wildlife management areas, focusing particularly on areas that are believed to be part of the tortoise’s historic range, and is currently conducting mark-recapture studies. Specific conservation actions include: • Inventory known gopher tortoise populations and relict individual localities to determine the extent of the population. • Facilitate appropriate habitat conservation initiatives to protect gopher tortoise sites identified in the inventory. Monitor these sites to determine stability of known populations. • Conduct landowner workshops to educate landowners about the importance of gopher tortoises and methods for protecting this species. • Conduct fire management operations at known gopher tortoise locations on SCDNR properties. • Encourage other property owners, especially owners/operators of public lands such as the Savannah River Site (SRS), Public Service Authority (PSA) and others to conduct fire management operations to further enhance gopher tortoise populations. • Continue gopher tortoise life history research. • Continue gopher tortoise repatriation/translocation technology research.
SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES. During the 2018-2019 reporting period SCDNR has continued to actively participate in gopher tortoise conservation and management. Both Xxxxxxx Sand Ridge Heritage Preserve and Aiken Gopher Tortoise Heritage Preserve have continued management activities for the benefit of the gopher tortoise, including prescribed fire. Additionally, SCDNR and Savannah River Ecology Lab (SREL) continue efforts to establish a MVP at AGTHP, which would be the third in South Carolina. SCDNR and Savanah River Ecology Lab (SREL) staff continued efforts to restock the AGTHP utilizing waif tortoises and have released more than 300 tortoises to the site (~180 adults). SCDNR continued their study to examine survivorship and movements of hatchling, head-started yearling, and head-started 2-year-old gopher tortoises at the preserve. To date, we have released 132 tortoises (20 hatchlings, 86 yearlings and 26 two-year olds). SREL and SCDNR have concluded the second year of sampling for a collaborative project to examine long-term site fidelity, social integration, and disease status of the AGTHP tortoises. Xxxxxxx XxXxx (UGA) has recently completed her work at the AGTHP and defended her thesis. Overall, Xxxxxxx completed 15-m spaced transect surveys for the entire preserve and marked and mapped nearly 500 xxxxxxx. Overall, Xxxxxxx documented a total of 128 live individuals, some of the tortoises captured being part of the original 2008 release group. As expected, annual apparent survival was lowest in juveniles (0.28), with subadult, adult male and adult female annual apparent survival ranging from 0.90-0.96 and not differing significantly from each other. This study provides one of the few estimates for juvenile survival available for any population of gopher tortoises, and survival of adults is similar to those reported for both wild in situ populations and for wild-to-wild translocated populations. There was no difference in survival due to location from which waifs were obtained (South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, or outside the species’ range). All individuals captured had blood taken (whole blood, blood smears, and plasma) and cloacal and oral swabs for disease testing. During 2017, the only pathogen detected was Mycoplasma agassizii and it was only detected in oral swabs (all cloacal swabs were negative). Six of the 60 individuals tested positive for a prevalence of 10%, which is comparable to wild gopher tortoise populations tested to date. In 2018, 122 oral swabs and 82 cloacal s...
