Common use of Step 1 Clause in Contracts

Step 1. The employee or the Union on the employee’s behalf shall present his/her grievance, in writing on the “Official Grievance Form” or facsimile, to his/her immediate supervisor within the appropriate time limit. The written grievance statement shall include, to the best of the employee’s understanding: A) The date the grievance occurred; B) A description of the problem; C) The contract provision alleged to be violated; and D) The remedy sought. The supervisor shall investigate the grievance and respond in writing within ten (10) days of the receipt of the grievance. If the response is unsatisfactory, the employee shall submit the written grievance and the response from the supervisor at STEP 1 to the Department Head at STEP 2. The grievance must be submitted within ten (10) days of the receipt of the response at STEP 1.
