Unpaid Leave of Absence. A. A leave of absence of up to two (2) years shall be granted any teacher, upon application, for the purpose of participating in exchange teaching programs in other states, territories, countries, foreign or military teaching programs, the Peace Corps, Teacher’s Corps or Job Corps as a full-time participant in such programs, provided said teacher states his/her intention to return to the school system. C. Maternity/Child Care leaves of up to one (1) year shall be granted upon request to any tenured teacher. A second year may be requested with a leave of absence without pay for the approval first four (4) years of the Assistant Superintendent elected period in a public office as an elected County official in Pennsylvania. No person on such leave shall be eligible for retirement credit or for the purchase of Human Resources. If denied retirement credit for the time spent on such leave, and at the end of the leave will end after one year. A teacher returning from leave provided in this paragraph the employee shall be placed on entitled to a position similar to that step of the salary schedule from which he/she went on was held prior to leave.
D. Unpaid leaves F. Employee that is required to appear in court as a Plaintiff, Defendant, or subpoenaed witness shall be, upon written application for approval submitted to the building principal or to their appropriate supervisor if it be other than the building principal, and granted unpaid leave for the duration of the appearance. If, however, employee is required to appear in court in connection with their employment with the District, they shall promptly notify the building principal or their appropriate supervisor if it be other than the building principal, and shall be granted paid leave for the duration of the appearance. Any appearance fee, for employee that is on paid leave, shall be remitted to the District. Once the Plaintiff, Defendant, or subpoenaed witness is excused and/or their presence is no longer required, they shall forthwith return to work and the unpaid or paid leave shall terminate.

Such leaves may also be granted by the Board for periods or its designee upon request of one (1) or two (2) semesters. No more than two (2) unpaid leaves of absence for study/travel will be granted per year.

Should the employee secure employment in another educational institution while on a personal leave the teachers leave shall be dissolved and the teacher full school year shall be considered substitute teachers and, therefore, not bargaining unit members. Employees hired to have resigned their positionreplace teachers who are on leaves of absences that equal or exceed a full school year shall be bargaining unit members entitled to all contractual rights and benefits.
E. All requests for leave of absence will be applied for and granted in writing. Requests The teacher must be submitted apply for leave at least sixty (60) calendar days before beginning date prior to its commencement, except in cases of emergency.
1. Requests shall be submitted to the Superintendent. The Superintendent will present the request with his/her recommendation to the Board of Education at the next regular meeting following the application. F. Any teacher whose personal illness extends beyond the period compensated (either through sick time or LTD) will be granted a leave of absence without pay for such time as is necessary for complete recovery for a maximum of one year.

During leaves of this nature, the Board has the discretion to hire substitute teachers for up to one year. Further extensions may be granted at the will of the Board. Upon return from the leave, a teacher will be assigned to the same or similar position, as soon as a vacancy exists subject to board policy dealing with layoffs.

A military leave of absence shall be granted to any teacher who shall be inducted or shall enlist for one period of military duty in any branch of the Armed Forces armed forces of the United States. Credit Upon return from such leave, the teacher shall be placed at the same position on the salary schedule shall be at as he/she would have been had he/she taught in the rate of one (1) year of teaching experience for every two (2) years of military service, not to exceed five (5) years of teaching experiencedistrict during such period.
C. All leaves of absences except those exempt by law and in paragraph "C" above, are at the discretion of the Board of Education. Written notice of intention to return or resign shall be given to the Superintendent by April 1. No benefits will accrue to a teacher during a leave of absence except as otherwise stated herein. Upon return from leave. In the event a suitable replacement can be employed, the teacher's accumulated sick leave accumulated at the time the leave commenced, will be restored. A teacher returning from a leave of absence shall take effect immediatelybe placed at the same position on the salary schedule, no experience credit to be given except as otherwise stated herein. A teacher granted an extension of a leave of absence shall be given a position upon return provided there is an opening in his/her area of qualification and he/she has given proper notification. Except for leaves of absence for maternity or ill health a teacher on leave must return at the beginning of the semester unless another appropriate time is mutually agreed upon.
F. Any teacher whose personal illness extends beyond the period compensated (either through sick time or LTD) will be granted a leave of absence without pay or increment for such time as is necessary for complete recovery for a maximum of one year. During leaves of this nature, the Board has the discretion to hire substitute teachers for up to one year. Further extensions may be granted at the will of the Board. Upon return from the leave, a teacher will be assigned to the same or similar position, as soon as a vacancy exists.

Unpaid Leave of Absence. A. A leave of absence of up to two (2) years shall be granted to any teacher, teacher upon application, application and approval by the Board for the purpose of participating in exchange teaching programs in other states, territories, or countries, provided said teacher states his/her intention to return to the school system. Upon return from such leave, a teacher shall be placed on the same step of the salary schedule as he/she occupied on the date of commencement of such leave.

If the teacher returns during a semester, he/she shall be given priority on the list of substitutes.

D. A leave of absence of up to two (2) years shall be granted to any teacher upon application and approval of the Board, for the purpose of serving as a full-time officer of or on full time staff of the AFT or NYSUT, or any other national or state professional organization or company. Upon return from such leave, such teacher shall be placed on the same step of the salary schedule as he/she occupied on the date of commencement of such leave.
E. A military leave of absence shall be granted to any teacher who shall be inducted or shall enlist in lieu of induction for military duty in any branch of the Armed Forces of the United States.
