Valencia. The city of Valencia represents the 16% of the total population of the Valencia Region being its capital city and it is, demographically and economically speaking, the third biggest city in Spain. Regarding waste collection, nowadays Valencia city is collecting 8 different kind of domestic waste streams: - Paper & cardboard - Light packaging: plastic, cans and beverage carton - Glass - Used oil - WEEE - Bulky products - Other waste - Organic (now as a trial pilot) Waste collection is being performed using a combination of different methods: door-to-door collection for commercial cardboard, bring banks for almost every domestic waste (domestic paper & cardboard, glass, light packaging, organic and other waste) and, finally, eco-parks and mobile eco-parks for other kind of materials (bulky waste, oil, WEEE, etc.) The frequency of collection in Valencia varies depending on the waste stream. It is stablished an everyday collection for organic and rest fraction and a 3 days per week frequency for packaging waste streams (paper, light packaging and glass). After collection, garbage and organic waste is transported to a treatment plant in Manises, in exception to the packaging plastic fraction contained in garbage: - PET - HDPE Bottles - HDPE Boxes - Mixed plastic - Film SAV is using around 45 trucks for the waste collection management, being 11 of them specifically used for packaging collection. Concerning the pilot experience to be developed in WP6 between M23 and M30, Valencia has decided to establish ‘San Xxxxxxxxx’ area as ‘pilot neighbourhood’. The distribution of the containers around the pilot place is as seen in the next figure:

Valencia. The City of Valencia has been sorting plastics for 20 years before implementing the PA, hence there were plastic containers spread over the city. On the other hand, the quality of the material deposited in the dedicated containers was not satisfactory, so the City decided to focus its work on that front in the last years. The goal with PlastiCircle was to improve the quality of the waste in the containers by educating people to throw the right waste in the right container. The containers are spread over the streets according to density population and conditions, not connected to any specific building. In normal conditions, the collection is made twice a week but for restaurants and places with a lot of commercial activities, the frequency is higher.
Valencia. The waste fraction of the domestic packaging is the fraction that most concerns the Valencian administration, so there is a wide debate on the best management for this waste. The selective collection in the Spanish State and therefore in the city of Valencia, is based on the fact that the packers are charged by a part of the economic cost of the management of their potential waste. To do so, each package that is placed on the market pays an amount to contribute to the cost of collecting, transporting, recycling and the cost of information campaigns. To identify the containers that have the right to be recycled, the called “green dot” is used, a symbol with two intertwined arrows.
