Gifted and talented definition

Gifted and talented means a child identified by the planning and placement team as (1) possessing demonstrated or potential abilities that give evidence of very superior intellectual, creative or specific academic capability and (2) needing differentiated instruction or services beyond those being provided in the regular school program in order to realize their intellectual, creative or specific academic potential. The term includes children with extraordinary learning ability and children with outstanding talent in the creative arts as defined by these regulations.

Gifted and talented means a child or youth who performs at or shows the potential for performing at a remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who exhibits high performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area, possesses an unusual capacity for leadership, or excels in a specific academic field. The identification of gifted and talented students is a multistep process, starting with a referral from a parent and/or teacher. The referral process occurs twice during the school year. In addition, all kindergarten and fifth grade students are screened and considered for further gifted and talented assessment, as well as all students in grades three through ten who score Level III on the STAAR assessment, will be considered for the gifted and talented referral process. Once a student is referred to the GT program, parents and teachers will be asked to complete a questionnaire and the student will be administered the Cogat which measures cognitive ability. Other information collected for identification are: report card grades, performance on a reading inventory, and performance on a state assessment for students in 4th grade and higher. The above information is sent to the District GT Selection Committee where a final determination is made for a student to receive GT services. Parents/guardians will receive written notification of the selection committee’s decision.
