Common use of Academic Leave Clause in Contracts

Academic Leave. 1. An employee may, upon written application, prior to the conclusion of the contract year, be granted leave of absence without pay for a period not to exceed one (1) year for pursuing studies related to professional growth and improvement. 2. Approval of academic leave of absence will be at the discretion of the board upon consideration of a specific application. Requests for academic leave must be submitted in writing prior to March 1 of each year for leave during the ensuing school year. 3. Eligibility for an academic leave of absence requires a minimum of four (4) years of continuous employment by the school district immediately prior to such leave of absence. 4. While an employee is granted a leave of absence, he/she will retain the following rights held by him/her before such leave was granted. (a) The same experience position on the salary schedule as held when the leave was granted. (b) Unused sick leave as held at the start of the leave of absence. 5. An employee on leave of absence must give written notice to the superintendent of schools prior to March 1 of the year the leave expires of his/her intention to return or resign. Failure to furnish such written notice will constitute a notice of resignation. An employee on leave may, because of extenuating circumstance, present a written request to the superintendent of schools to extend the notification date to May 1.
