Approved Use of Sick Leave Days. a. Each teacher shall be granted paid sick leave up to the maximum number of days that he/she has accumulated. b. Teachers may use sick leave for absence due to personal illness, pregnancy, care for his/her newborn child up to 6 weeks of age, injury, or exposure to contagious disease. c. Teachers may use sick leave for absence due to illness, injury, or death in the immediate family. Immediate family shall be defined as spouse, child, parent, relative living in the same household as the teacher, or any person living in the same household as the teacher and who clearly has stood in the same relationship to the teacher as a spouse, child, or parent although not related to the teacher by law. d. Members of the family not listed above – Absence shall be granted up to but not to exceed five (5) days in any one (1) school year. Family in this category includes parent-in-law, grandparent, grandparent-in-law, grandchild, brother, sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunt, and uncle. e. Except for members of the immediate family, absence to provide day care for individuals who are ill is not considered an appropriate use of sick leave. f. In extenuating circumstances, the Superintendent/designee may grant additional days.
