Bereavement and Funeral Leave. 1. Full-time regular employees will be granted a maximum of five (5) paid days leave in the event of a death in their immediate family to a maximum of ten (10) paid days leave per fiscal year. For the purposes of this paragraph only, if additional time away from work is needed, an employee may use accumulated sick leave up to a maximum of one-half (1/2) of the total sick days accumulated at the time of the qualifying event in addition to or in lieu of accumulated annual leave. 2. For the purpose of this Article “immediate family” is defined as spouse, children (or person for whom the unit member acted as parent), parents (or person who acted as the unit member’s parent when the employee was a child), grandparents, grandchildren, sisters, brothers, step children, xxxxxx children, step parents, half-brothers, half-sisters, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother- in-law and sister-in-law, and significant other in the household. 3. Full-time regular employees may be granted paid leave, in an amount determined by the Director to a maximum of one (1) day to permit an employee's attendance at the funeral of any of the employee's aunts or uncles, provided that in no event shall the total amount of bereavement and/or funeral leave payable to an employee under all paragraphs of this Article exceed ten (10) days per fiscal year. Up to an additional two (2) days of paid funeral leave per fiscal year beyond the above referenced tenten (10) days may be granted by the appropriate supervisor if extended travel is required in order to attend the funeral. The unit member may supplement funeral leave with accrued annual leave with supervisory approval. The supervisor may request the unit member to provide a copy of the obituary or other appropriate documentation as an added condition of granting time.
