Clean and Green. ‌ North Ayrshire’s environment is one of its biggest assets, with 92% of the area classified as countryside, half of its land area consisting of the islands of Arran and Cumbrae, and a total coastline of 140 miles (98 miles on the islands and 42 miles on the mainland). This environmental value can be evidenced by the formal recognition of significant areas within North Ayrshire as of national and international quality for landscape and wildlife, with national and international designations for landscape and nature conservation value. The environment is also highly valued by local residents. A People’s Panel survey carried out in 2006 as part of the development of the Community Plan, identified that the top 5 things that people most like about living in North Ayrshire included the access to the coast and countryside, beautiful scenery/ open spaces/ countryside, and the healthy environment and fresh air.45 This finding was repeated in the ‘Living in North Ayrshire’ online survey carried out by North Ayrshire Xxxxx Xxxx in 2008, with many respondents including environmental factors such as ‘clean’, ‘by the sea’, ‘good scenery’ and ‘the beaches’ within the things they like best about North Ayrshire.46 Environmental issues are also significant when asked what people would like to improve about their local community, with litter, fly-tipping, dog-fouling, streetlighting and roads repairs common issues raised in local surveys and via service requests. ‘Litter’, ‘the rubbish’, ‘vandalism’, ‘graffiti’ and ‘pollution’ have also all been identified as amongst the things young people like least about living in North Ayrshire.47 However in general, neighbourhood satisfaction continues to be relatively high in North Ayrshire, with the latest People’s Panel survey finding that 88% rate their own neighbourhood as a very good/ fairly good place to live, and 70% are satisfied with the way open spaces (e.g. parks and playparks) are looked after in their area.48 Improving transport links and services continues to be an issue in relation to accessing employment and services (as covered under ‘Working and Training’ earlier), but also in relation to encouraging greater use of public transport, walking and cycling.
