Geotechnical Data Collection and Recommendations Sample Clauses

Geotechnical Data Collection and Recommendations. The purpose of this investigation is to perform hand augers to characterize the existing soils and to determine the proper management of these soils for the proposed crossings and emergency access travel ways. The CONSULTANT will perform the following activities:  Make a visit to the project site and stake the proposed hand auger borings.  Perform approximately 85 hand auger borings along the proposed structures: 11 hand augers per proposed low water crossing, 6 hand augers per proposed roadway, and 17 hand augers per proposed pathway for emergency vehicles. The hand augers will be performed to depths of up to 8-10 feet below ground surface (bgs) or until collapse or refusal, whichever occurs first. Hand augers will be performed on the center of the alignment of the proposed construction. Figure 1 shows the location of areas of proposed access changes throughout the site.  Hand auger borings will be backfilled with cuttings and clean imported soil as needed to bring the borehole up to grade.  Log soil strata observed during boring operations based on the Visual-Manual Identification of Soils (ASTM D 2488) and our experience with similar soils in Central Florida.  Perform laboratory tests on selected samples at Wood’s materials testing laboratory. These tests may include natural moisture content (ASTM D 2216); grain size analysis (ASTM D Exhibit B 1140 and/or ASTM D 422); Atterberg Limits (ASTM D 4318); and organic content (ASTM D 2974) to confirm our field classifications. The CONSULTANT will prepare a geotechnical report summarizing the findings, conclusions and recommendations from our subsurface exploration. The report will include:  A description of the exploratory procedures and geotechnical subsurface exploration methods.  Boring logs, location map and laboratory test results summaries.  A characterization of the proposed crossings, roadways, and emergency pathways using the boring logs.  Conclusions as to the suitability of the existing soil for use in the proposed project features.  Recommendations for preparation of the soil and soil base for the proposed crossings and roadways and/or as bedding material for proposed drainage conduits.
