Parental Leave Entitlement. a) A staff member who is the co-parent (or the birthing parent’s partner) of a newborn child is entitled to sixty-two (62) consecutive weeks of parental leave without pay that may be taken anytime within eighteen (18) months of the birth. b) Further parental leave without pay, of up to five (5) additional weeks, will be granted where the child is certified by a medical practitioner to be suffering from a physical, psychological or emotional condition. c) Where a member is eligible for the Employment Insurance (EI) Parental Sharing Benefit, the duration of the parental leave available under this article is extended by: i) five (5) weeks where the member has elected to receive the standard parental benefit of 35 weeks, such that the total parental leave is extended to forty (40) weeks; or ii) eight (8) weeks where the member has elected to receive the extended parental benefit of sixty-one (61) weeks, such that the total parental leave is extended to sixty-nine (69) weeks.
