Placement on the Salary Schedule. A. Initial employment in the Suffield Public Schools. 1. New teachers to the Suffield Public Schools shall be placed on the appropriate step on the salary schedule. Full credit is given for public school experience as a certified teacher recognized as such for purposes of reciprocal certification by the Connecticut State Department of Education or public school experience served under a durational shortage area permit. Such experience shall have been continuous service of at least one-half of any school year. Intermittent short term substitute service shall not be credited as previous teaching experience. Credit for military service recognized by another public school system shall be recognized by the Board for purposes of placement on salary schedule. The Superintendent may grant credit on the salary schedule for teacher experience at an accredited college or university or any other educational institution accredited by the appropriate certifying agency or accrediting agency of a local, state, federal or foreign government. The Superintendent may grant credit on the salary schedule to a certified teacher for any other type of experience deemed relevant to teaching in the East Hampton School System. Before granting such credit, the Superintendent shall consult with a committee consisting of the Building Administrator and Department Head or teacher in the appropriate subject area or teacher at the elementary level, depending on the position the job applicant is seeking.
3. As of September l, 1976, there shall be no military service credit except that those teachers receiving military credit on that date shall continue to receive such credit at the rate then in effect.
C. Any teacher expecting receiving a change in degree status must notify the Superintendent no later than January 2 in order to will be placed on the appropriate salary schedule for the following school year.
1. Teachers submitting documentation of said degree achievement prior to September will be placed on the new salary schedule for lane beginning with the first paycheck of the new school year.
2. Any teacher submitting documentation of in September for degree achievement changes occurring between January 1 and August 31; and January 1 for degree changes occurring between September 1 and March 1 December 31. In order to be eligible for such increase the teacher shall notify the Superintendent of the new school year, will be placed on the new salary schedule beginning with intended change for the next paycheck.

For any increase to be effective of September 1, proof of course completion must be submitted no later than October 1, unless beyond the control of the new school year will not teacher. 4. The reason Any teacher with 15 hours or more beyond any degree will receive $500 more than the salary at that step and level as long as he/she continues in a planned program, but in no event, shall such teacher receive this stipend for notification no later more than January 2 is in order that funds four years. This provision shall not apply beyond the Sixth Year.
5. Annual increments for teaching services may be budgeted withheld by the Board of Education because of unsatisfactory teaching performance on the part of any certified professional employee. Teachers shall be notified prior to meet the salary change in May 15 if increments are to be withheld for the next fiscal year.
D. Placement on the Salary Schedule. A. Initial employment Teachers new to or rehired by the District shall be given credit for previous experience accepted by the Illinois Teacher’s Retirement System to determine placement on the teacher’s salary schedule. In order to fill vacancies in specified teacher shortage areas, as defined in the Suffield Public SchoolsBoard Policy Manual, the Board may recognize up to five (5) years of other teaching experience or other related work experience.
B. Salary increments are not automatic. Should the work of a teacher be unsatisfactory as determined by the Principal and the Superintendent through evaluation procedure, salary increases will be withheld by the Board. In such cases the teacher shall be notified as to the situation and shall have the opportunity for a conference with the Administration to discuss means of improvement.
C. All teachers who are required to travel from school to school will receive a mileage at the IRS reimbursement rate to be set at the beginning of each school year (September) by the Board of Education per mile. Mileage will be figured from the center where the teacher first reports for teaching assignment to the last center of the day. Teachers shall keep daily records of such mileage by the month on forms provided. Mileage reimbursement shall be paid monthly.
D. Horizontal movement on the salary schedule for additional course work shall be made on the September payroll for transcripts submitted prior to September 15th, and on the February payroll, calculated on a per diem basis, from January 21st for transcripts submitted prior to February 15th.
E. Credit beyond the bachelor’s degree column must be for:
1. New teachers to Courses in a Master’s Degree plan with prior written approval of the Suffield Public Schools shall Superintendent.
2. Graduate hours toward professional growth with prior written approval of the Superintendent.
F. Graduate level courses taken beyond the Master’s Degree will be placed accepted for placement on the appropriate step salary schedule when courses are in the teacher’s teaching field, when courses apply toward a degree program, or when courses apply toward a second major or consist of one reading course, or three counseling courses. A minimum grade of “B” in a graduate level course as recorded on the official attending college transcript is required to advance on the salary schedule. Full credit shall be granted Pass/Fail or audited courses will not meet the criteria for advancement on the prevailing schedule for prior teaching experiencesalary schedule. 328.2 For teachers entering or returning to the Newtown school system, credit will be given, according to the schedule below, for previous satisfactory paid teaching experience as determined by the Superintendent in public, private and military dependency schools, provided that such experience shall have been continuous service of at least one-half of any school year. As Intermittent or short-term substitute's service will not be credited as previous teaching experience. (a) Teacher experience interrupted by a period of five or more years may be considered for credit on the salary guide. The Superintendent will determine when it is in the best interest of the district to grant usual or partial credit.
(b) The Board of Education may give district administrators, who request reassignment to the position of teacher, credit on the salary schedule for service as an administrator provided such a reassignment does not result in a Newtown teacher losing their position as a teacher.
(c) The Superintendent may give partial credit on the salary schedule for experience in careers other than teaching if that experience is deemed by the Superintendent to entail skills and knowledge necessary to fulfill the teaching assignment.
28.3 For any year in which the parties agree in writing there shall be no military service credit except that those teachers receiving military credit on that date shall continue to receive such credit at step advancement, each teacher presently employed in the rate then in effect.
C. Any teacher expecting a change in degree status must notify the Superintendent no later than January 2 in order to Newtown school system will be placed advanced one step above his step on the appropriate salary schedule for each year provided the Board shall not have voted to withhold increment in his case, in which event the teacher must have been informed, in writing, of the specific reasons for such withholding of increments. Teachers who have reached the top step of a salary schedule and who are reemployed for the following school year shall receive the increase to which they are entitled under the provisions of Appendix C, provided the Board shall not have voted to withhold any or all of such increase, for the following school year, in the case of a particular teacher, in which event such teacher must have been informed, in writing, of the specific reason or reasons for withholding such increase.
1. Teachers submitting documentation 28.4 Any teacher entering the Newtown school system who has satisfactorily completed active service in the Armed Forces of said degree achievement prior to September will the United States of at least six (6) months' duration shall be placed credited with one step on the new salary schedule.
28.5 Each teacher presently employed in the Newtown school system whose service is interrupted by active service in the Armed Forces of the United States shall be credited with one step on the salary schedule for each year of such service to a maximum of two steps.
28.6 Both parties recognize that compensation for academic course credits beyond a Bachelor's degree shall only be required for courses taken after the first paycheck teacher has been certified to teach. Compensation is not required for courses taken after initial certification but needed to qualify for certification in the State of Connecticut.
28.7 A teacher who reaches the maximum on the Bachelor's Degree Schedule will move directly across to the Master's Degree schedule if a Master's Degree is granted mid-year, and up one step at the beginning of the new school year.
2. Any teacher submitting documentation of degree achievement between September 1 and March 1 of the new school year, will be placed on the new salary schedule beginning with the next paycheck.
