Preceptor. A preceptor is an experienced nurse proficient in clinical teaching who is specifically responsible for planning, organizing and evaluating the new skill development of a senior practicum nurse or an employed nurse enrolled in a defined program, the parameters of which have been set forth in writing by the Employer. Inherent in the preceptor role is the responsibility for specific, criteria-based and goal directed education and training for a specific training period. Nursing management will determine the need for preceptor assignments. Each newly hired nurse, nurse transferring to a new unit, and a senior practicum nurse shall be assigned a preceptor. It is understood that staff nurses in the ordinary course of their responsibilities will be expected to participate in the general orientation process of new nurses. This would include the providing of informational assistance, support and guidance to new nurses.
