Preparation Time. a13.1 Preparation time is time within the school day, as defined by The Education Act, (1995), when the teacher is not performing instructional tasks involving direct interaction with students. Teachers will exercise professional responsibility regarding their choices for the use of this time in a manner that is consistent with the duties of teachers as described in section 231 of The Education Act, 1995 (see appendix #2). The Teacher shall not be allocated at least two hundred, forty (240) minutes for each period allowed to leave the school during preparation time unless the Teacher has the consent of five (5) instructional days, exclusive of recess and lunch periodthe Principal to do so. b(c) Additional Notwithstanding the foregoing, existing provisions or practices respecting preparation time of 200 minutes which provide superior benefits to the provisions set out above shall be allocated to each full-time classroom Teacher during the maintained on a school year and shall be scheduled by each Principal during the school year in consultation with school stafflevel basis. c) No preparation period shall be less than thirty (30) minutes. d) Preparation time for part-time Teachers shall be pro-ratedscheduled in blocks of not less than twenty (20) consecutive minutes. The Board shall endeavour to schedule in blocks of forty (40) or more consecutive minutes. (e) Professional Activity Days shall not be considered instructional days for the purpose of scheduling preparation time. (f) Notwithstanding other provisions in of this Collective Agreement, the board Board may assign the additional teaching staff generated by the increase in elementary Teacher preparation time above the 2008-09 level 2009 level, to enable full-time school school- based teaching assignments in the Arts in more than one elementary school. This shall be done in consultation with the District Staffing a Joint Board-Union Committee. f(g) Notwithstanding other provisions in this Collective Agreement, the additional weekly minutes of preparation time above the 2008-09 level, generated within 20 consecutive instructional days, may be aggregated to provide for meaningful blocks of preparation time for Teachers. The Board may not use the aggregated additional minutes of preparation to hire occasional Teachers to provide Teacher coverage, as opposed to regular specialist Teachers. g(h) Missed preparation time shall only be rescheduled where a Teacher is required by the principal Principal to provide instruction during his or her their scheduled preparation time for a Teacher absent from work. Such rescheduling of missed preparation time shall occur as soon as administratively feasible, but no later than three months twenty (20) days after the loss of the preparation time and in any event within the same school year. h) Professional activity days shall not be considered instructional days for the purpose of scheduling preparation time. (i) The Board shall not combine classes ensure that all additionally funded positions for the sole purpose of providing preparation time. Notwithstanding the above, the Board and Union may agree that models designed to enhance programming through the use of specialist Teachers can result in combined classes that provide preparation time for some Teachersshall be hired as set out in the Appendix to the PDT Agreement. (j) The Board will share the appropriate information regarding staff numbers when they are filed annually with the Ministry of Education.
