Reimbursement of Off-Duty Education Expenses. Employees shall be eligible for reimbursement for costs of tuition, registration fees, books and supplies, and other educational expenses incurred in connection with enrollment and successful completion of job-related course work. The job- related nature of, and need for, such course work shall be validated in advance of enrollment by the respective department head. If the department head determines that the employee's coursework is not job- related, the employee shall be notified immediately. Disputes regarding the job-related nature of course work shall be classified as grievances and handled through the grievance procedure. An employee shall be eligible to receive reimbursement not to exceed Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) per fiscal year, provided that course of instruction require attendance at an accredited college or university, are part of a curriculum leading to a degree and sponsored by an accredited institution of learning, and are approved in advance of enrollment by the respective department head. Notwithstanding this provision, all approvals shall be subject to availability of funds.
