Rendezvous. FALL VOL 8, NO. 4, 2006 Board Retreat and Volunteer Picnic Wrap-up B xxxx members and invited guests started to chart a clear course for our organization at a recent Board retreat. On Saturday, August 12, we met at the Champaign County Forest Preserve District’s Riverview Retreat Center along the Sangamon River north of Mahomet. At this retreat we started the task of developing a written vision and mis- sion. We have a strong history of conservation, stewardship, and education to build upon. This history and a clear vision will lead us toward a future where we can be more active in the protection of natural areas. To help guide us, though, we need to have a clearly articulated vision of where we want to go. When drafts of the vision and mission statements are finished, they will be distributed to the membership for com- ment. Following the Board retreat, all members and volunteers were invited to the Riverview Retreat Center for a Volun- xxxx Appreciation Picnic. The Board provided pizza and drinks with many yummy side-dishes provided by attendees. This was a time for the organization to thank our many vol- unteers. Without volunteers, we wouldn’t exist! Everyone had a good time eating and catching up on summertime ac- tivities. We hope to make this a yearly event. Thanks to all who attended! 2 A Prairie Rendezvous P.O. Rendezvous. The operation of retrieving or releasing manned on-board control of an autonomous ship. This can be after a full communication failure or as a regular operation, e.g. a pilot point. The operation involves a high security ship to ship communication link. Wide/Spot beam: Satellites use a number of transponders and antennas to provide coverage in a geographic area. The covered area will share the bandwidth provided in that beam and bandwidth will be limited by the frequency and modulation the satellite uses for the beam. Spot beams will allow the satellite to give higher bandwidth in a smaller geographic area and several spots can be directed to different areas to reuse the frequency and modulation system, thus providing a higher total bandwidth to the users of that one satellite. Wide beams are used to give coverage to wider geographic areas with few users, e.g. high seas, to avoid using up the limited number of transponders and antennas the satellite carries.
Rendezvous. The team will meet at a designated area at the Southern California Marine Institute parking lot. Research staff with an Earthwatch sign will meet you. You will then board the USC boat, “Miss Xxxxxxx”, that will take you to Catalina Island. It is approximately a 1.5-hour boat ride to the island. Closed toed shoes are required and an extra layer (such as a sweatshirt) is recommended regardless of the time of year. The Miss Xxxxxxx does not have a bathroom on board, so please plan accordingly and use the restroom at SCMI before departure. Participants are responsible for their own breakfast prior to arrival. Please also fill your drinking bottle with water in preparation for the trip. Please do not arrive early at the project site. However, arriving early in the area can give you a great opportunity to explore the Los Angeles area before the project begins. TEEN team participants are strongly discouraged from arriving in the area early, due to unavailability of supervision.
