Procedure. An initial retrospective online screening was carried out to identify potential participants with PMS, using the (German PMS Inventory; Xxxxxx et al., 2011b). The existence of other mental disorders was also assessed using the Brief Web-Based Screening Questionnaire for Mental Disorders (WSQ; Xxxxxx et al., 2009). Based on the results of the German PMS Inventory (Ditzen et al., 2011b), the women who fulfilled the inclusion criteria (see Table 1) were assigned to either the control group or the PMS group. Depending on the screening results, a further exploration by a telephone interview followed. For women who affirmed any of the WSQ-items, the well validated International Diagnostic Checklists for ICD-10 (IDCL; Xxxxxx, Zaudig, & Mombour, 2004) were applied in order to check participants for any other mental disorders in addition to PMS. In a next step, daily records of premenstrual complaints (symptoms are listed in the footnote of Table 5.1) and the associated impairment of social functioning had to be completed over two menstrual cycles by women suffering from PMS. The daily record was based on the German PMS Inventory (Ditzen et al., 2011b) that we used during the initial screening procedure. It was provided as an Excel® file in which participants entered their symptoms every day. The original statements of this questionnaire were modified using only the single term of the symptom instead of the complete item wordings (e.g., “hopelessness” instead of “I feel more hopeless”). Items were rated by participants on a 4-point Likert scale. The assessment began on the first day of the next menses and lasted for two menstrual cycles. Participants whose diaries were incomplete on the days of the menstrual cycle that were substantial for checking eligibility criteria of PMS symptom severity and disability (see Table 5.1) were excluded. Moreover, by analyzing the daily records, women who did not fulfill the specified cut-off values confirming a PMS (see Table 5.1) were excluded. After completing the diary, two experimental sessions followed. These sessions included online versions of emotional Stroop task (EST) and German PMS Inventory (Ditzen et al., 2011b).
