Common use of CLASSROOM TEACHERS’ PLANNING TIME Clause in Contracts

CLASSROOM TEACHERS’ PLANNING TIME. Elementary classroom teachers shall be afforded six hundred five (605) minutes per week, and secondary classroom teachers shall be afforded five hundred ninety (590) minutes per week, to be used for planning or conference time, as designated by the administration during the work day after the administration schedules instructional time sufficient to ensure satisfaction of State instructional time requirements and any other duty time. Up to 30 hours of planning time per year may be used for meetings called by the Administration, including staff meetings, department/grade level meetings, school improvement meetings, meetings that pertain to goal setting and the evaluation process, and/or other meetings at the principal’s discretion. Meetings specifically excluded from counting toward the 30 hours are IEPs, 504s, Student Assistance Team or other academic/behavioral meetings legally required as well as Collaborative Teacher Teams. Additionally, meetings for which the employee is paid a stipend to attend or for which the employee has willfully volunteered are not counted toward the 30 hours. When a new initiative that may infringe upon planning time is being considered, Association representatives chosen by the VEA will be involved in shared advisory discussions with the Administration representatives. These discussions will be substantive and timely. It is recognized that the constraints of financial resources and/or extenuating circumstances (such as scheduling) may prevent implementation of planning time every day for every teacher. It is also recognized that severe weather or emergency situations may require teachers to supervise students during planning time which may be scheduled during students’ lunch and/or recess. In the event of a decrease in enrollment or revenue which could result in the layoff of teachers, this provision may be suspended.
