Gabions. 1. Gabion units shall be assembled in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and instructions and shall be sufficiently filled with Class 6G material complying with Table 3/1, with an allowance for consolidation of fill, so as to minimize distortion during construction. Gabion units shall, where appropriate, be maintained square and with vertical sides during filling. Internal tie wires shall be inserted and units shall be tensioned in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Gabion units shall be constructed so as to maintain tightness of mesh and shall be laced securely with wire, complying with sub- Clause 3 of this Clause. 2. The gabion mesh shall be one of the following: a. A mesh manufactured from wire complying with BS 1052 having a minimum core diameter of 2.0 mm. b. A geomesh, being a grid of plastic material suitable for use in earthworks. 3. All wire shall be galvanized in compliance with BS EN ISO 1461 : 1999 and be coated with a minimum thickness of 0.55 mm of PVC for extruded coatings and 0.25 mm of PVC for bonded coatings. The PVC shall be capable of resisting the effects of immersion in sea water, exposure to ultra violet light and abrasion, when tested for a period not less than 3000 hours in accordance with BS 2782-0 : Part 0 : 2004 : Method 540B (ISO 4892). 4. The maximum size of fill material shall not exceed two thirds of the minimum dimension of the gabion compartment or 200 mm whichever is smaller and the minimum size of the fill, shall be not less than the size of the mesh opening. 5. Fill material shall be placed to produce a neat face and line with minimum voids. 6. Fill to the gabion baskets shall be such that the unit weight of the fill as placed shall be not less than 15 kN/m3. The fill material shall consist of local natural stone. 7. Mechanical equipment may only be used for filling gabion units provided that the results are equivalent to filling by hand.

Gabions. Where shown on the drawings or as directed by the Engineer, the Contractor shall excavate, trim to line and level, provide and erect gabions including providing selected rock, crushed if necessary, packed and compacted inside the gabions. Gabions shall include gabion mattresses and gabion boxes and for the purposes of construction and method of measurement and payment, no distinction shall be made between them. Gabions shall be “Maccaferri” boxes and / or “Reno” mattresses both with diaphragms at one metre centres, or similar approved. The maximum mesh size shall be 100 mm x 120 mm for boxes and 60 mm x 80 mm for mattresses. The wire used for the construction of gabions shall unless otherwise instructed by the Engineer comply with the requirements below. Should a dispute arise or be declared, such dispute shall be resolved by an Arbitrator appointed by the Developer. The costs in respect thereof shall be borne by the unsuccessful party. Pending the outcome of the dispute, the PURCHASER shall be obliged to pay the outstanding amount to the Conveyancers who shall hold it in trust.
