Health and Hardship Leave. 1. The Board may grant a leave of absence for not more than one (1) year without compensation to any personnel member who is unable to perform his/her regular duties for an extended period of time because of personal illness, accident, or equally grave emergency, provided written request for such leave of absence is submitted by the personnel, and provided a written certification of illness is received from a physician for a health leave. 2. In computing service to determine said personnel's salary at expiration of leave, time spent on leave shall not be counted as active service. Personnel must provide a statement from a licensed physician as evidence of recovered health before being permitted to return to duties in the Okemos Schools. Returning personnel shall be given the same classification and salary step as they had at the time leave was taken, but shall be granted such increase or decrease as pertaining to that same classification and salary step provided by the new salary schedule.
