It is essential to build a level of trust so that participants feel that they are able to freely exchange thoughts, ideas, criticisms, etc. Development of personal relationships also promotes recognition of interdependence among participants and an understanding of common goals, issues, and interests. While relationship building is often done through formal workshops and conferences, informal meetings, field trips, and other activities can also be beneficial.
