Professional drivers to promote compassionate care Sample Clauses

Professional drivers to promote compassionate care. Compassionate care is perceived to be fundamental to nursing (Xxxxxxxx, 2011; Xxxxxxxxxx, 2012; Xxxxxxxx, 2011). However, this is not new and Xxxxxxxx (2011) points out that Xxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxx translated her Christian ideals into professional nursing and stipulated the moral and religious virtues that the nurse is required to exhibit which included being kind, compassionate and technically competent. Xxxxxxxx (2011) states that Xxxxxxxxxxx addressed the concept of suffering of the sick person and admonished nurses to strive to alleviate suffering through acts of compassion, which demonstrated the value Nightingale placed on compassion. As part of the characterization of the nurse by Xxxxxxxxxxx, the nurse was to develop compassionate characteristics, which has contributed to the nursing profession being associated with compassion (Xxxxxxxx, 2011; Xxxxxxxx, 2011). The Royal College of Nursing (2010) in partnership with the Department of Health, Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and service user organisations introduced eight principles of nursing practice, which outline what patients, carers and staff can expect. The principles were designed for nursing teams to use for quality improvement, evaluation of nursing care and professional development (RCN, 2010). Principle A highlights compassion and states that nurses and nursing staff will treat patients with dignity, humanity, understand their needs and show compassion and sensitivity (RCN, 2010). The RCN (2012) also commissioned the Xxxxxx report to review pre-registration education to establish the essential features and the support newly qualified nurses require to ensure the development of competent and compassionate nurses. The NMC also introduced a document on Standards for Pre- Registration Nursing Education to embed compassion in nurse education (NMC, 2010). The standards stress...
