Refinement. Refine the way experiments are carried out, and animals are housed, managed and handled, to reduce negative impacts and increase positive welfare. For example, appropriate pain relief, enhanced environmental enrichment and positive reinforcement behavioural training to accomplish tasks. This means that animals can only be used when there are no reliable or suitable alternatives, the number of animals used is minimised and any potential harm to animals must be minimised and weighed against the potential benefit to humans or other animals. Scientific advances have changed the use of animals in research. Recent developments let researchers reduce the number of animals used and have helped researchers refine their methods to minimise or eliminate pain and distress. Opportunities for re-homing animals are also available, where appropriate. The Three Rs are also promoted, through yearly awards at various institutions and a biennial implementation award from the government, for research that advances at least one of the three principles. The long-term goal is the replacement of animals used in research, as science, technology and law permits. The status of the Openness Agreement This Agreement has been developed proactively and is supported by its signatories in addition to their legal and regulatory obligations within New Zealand. Signatories are expected to proactively work towards fulfilling the five Commitments. If an organisation is unable to make any progress, it will be asked to reconsider its position as a signatory to the Agreement. All signatories agree to take steps to be more open about their use of animals in research and teaching in line with the five Commitments. Exactly how these Commitments are fulfilled will differ between organisations depending upon their operation and purpose, their capacity and their different legal obligations. Refinement. In the final step the remaining chronic generic and condition-specific items were read out loud in a DISABKIDS workshop. All attending DISABKIDS members had the opportunity to comment on each statement. Some items were removed or rewritten in instances that they were unethical, had double meaning, and were still redundant or not applicable to all countries. Results A total of 154 children and adolescents, 142 family members and 26 health care professionals participated in either focus groups or interviews. A total of 3515 statements were identified from the DISABKIDS focus group and interview transcripts. The 488 generic statements, which were not related to having a disease were sent to the parallel KIDSCREEN project 35. Of the remaining statements 1647 were applicable to any of the chronic medical conditions (chronic generic) while between 66 and 340 statements were specific to one of the seven chronic conditions (condition-specific). These two groups were the start of the two modules in the development of the DISABKIDS HRQoL instrument. One DISABKIDS member in Scotland, Germany and the Netherlands scored all of the items in the first redundancy procedure (Step 1), each voted to remove 1404, 1614 and 2239 statements respectively, with between 50 and 68% being scored as semantically equivalent or redundant. Eventually 1802 of the 3027 items were marked under one of the rules by 2 or more raters (Box 2). This left us with 1225 statements, a reduction of 60%. Notwithstanding the warranties provided elsewhere herein, Buyer acknowledges that Licensed Software may be product, aircraft, or sensor specific and, as such, may require reasonable adjustment or refinement to suit Buyer's specific requirements. Subject to the receipt of adequate written notice and reasonable aid from Buyer, Honeywell will make reasonable, commercial efforts to accomplish reasonable adjustments or refinements for up to 90 calendar days after initial delivery of the Licensed Software. This shall not restrict Honeywell’s ability to make further adjustments and refinements, at its discretion, to the Licensed Software more than 90 day calendar days after initial delivery of the Licensed Software.
Refinement. Teeth may not move as anticipated. There are many potential reasons for teeth not moving according to plan. This may be due to incomplete compliance, where the aligners are not worn as directed. Some teeth may be too short and insufficient tooth may be available for aligners to engage. Some teeth may be ankylosed, which is fused to the jawbone and unable to move. Patients may require additional impressions, or intra-oral scans, and/or refinement aligners after the initial series of aligners. This may be necessary to optimize the outcome. There may be additional expenses associated with refinement aligners. Retainers: at the conclusion of active orthodontic treatment, it will be necessary to maintain the teeth and prevent them from shifting.
