Stem cells. Stem cells are immature progenitor cells that are characterised by self-renewal and the production of daughter cells that can undergo multilineage differentiation. Following asymmetric mitosis their cell-fate may be determined by the mother cell or by environmental factors (Xxxx and Xxxxx 2000, Xxxxxxxx 2000). Using their range of developmental potency, stem cells can be classified into: • Totipotent, which can give rise to all the embryonic tissues and placenta • Pluripotent which can differentiate only into embryonic tissues belonging to the inner cell mass (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm) • Multipotent, which can give rise only to tissues belonging to one embryonic germ layer (ectoderm or mesoderm or endoderm) • Unipotent, which generate a single cell type (Krampera, Xxxxxxxxx et al. 2007, Xxxxxxx, Xxxxxxx et al. 2013)
