It is governed by a 15-member Board of Directors, and housed on Bayer’s Berkeley site with all facilities, including telecommunications, utilities, and meeting space, provided. Bayer started Biotech Partners through the DA in 1992, with a commitment of $1.1 million to design and launch the program over the first five years. Bayer contributions total more than $6.7 million to date (inflation-adjusted dollars). The company pays for 23 paid interns each year, and has hired 52 program graduates. Today, Biotech Partners receives broad support from local biotech companies, government grants, and public agencies. In 2013 Biotech Partners served one class each of juniors and seniors at each of the two participating high schools, for a total of approximately 130. An additional eight students were enrolled in the co-op community college program. Bayer’s effort to “scale up” the Biotech Partners model through its support of Cal State East Bay is described in the introductory section of this annual report. • 38 students graduated from the Biotech Academies at Berkeley High and Oakland Tech. • 40 juniors were enrolled, and 28 seniors. • Biotech Partners placed a record 42 high school students in summer internships with 17 employers—including 15 at Bayer. • Ten community college students were placed in year-round co-op internships, including 8 at Bayer. • Over the past eight years, 100% graduating Biotech Partners high school students have continued their post-secondary education, either through the Biotech Partners community college program or at other two-or four-year colleges (the national average is 70%). • Since 1993 the overall completion rate of the community college program is 57%—higher than the national average of 46%. One of this year’s graduates was accepted into a new internship program launched by Novartis. • Biotech Partners student interns have earned more than $3.2 million to date. • Employers report that Biotech Partners graduates come better prepared for their positions than graduates of four-year universities, noting that they believe this is in large measure due to the program’s pairing of both academic and on-the-job training. • Biotech Partners community college students Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxx and Xxxx Xxxxxx were each awarded $1,500 scholarships by Xxxxx’x Xxxxxx Board.
