Confirmation Sampling Strategy, XRF Field Analysis, and Rationale. Excavation verification sampling and excavation verification sampling quality control will be generally conducted according to the following schematic: SAMPLE Field Duplicate Samples taken at 10% of locations Ziplock Bag Homogenize and remove rocks XRF Analysis for metals (100% of Samples) 10% of samples analyzed twice (Duplicate XRF Analysis) Submit for Lab Analysis 20% analyzed for metals to confirm XRF; 100% analyzed for PAHs XRF technology will be applied to analyze soil excavation samples for lead and arsenic. Field XRF procedures will be consistent with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Method 6200. Samples will be homogenized prior to analyses to provide data representative of the entire sample interval. Rocks, gravel, and other heterogeneous materials will be removed from the samples prior to analysis to limit matrix interference. Section 7.2 describes XRF sample handling procedures and Section 8.0 discusses XRF quality control parameters. XRF samples will be collected from the excavation base and each exposed excavation side- wall. Samples will be collected following the initial excavation and each excavation expansion, as appropriate based on the nature of the expansion, if necessary. For example, additional side-wall samples will not be collected if only vertical expansion excavation occurs. Side-wall samples will be collected from the exposed side-wall surface based on the greatest potential for impacts. Excavation base samples will be collected from the excavation base surface. While excavating the existing area where soils failed TCLP criteria (See Figure 5 of Appendix A for an approximation of this area), XRF field sampling will be conducted with at a minimum frequency of one sample per 50 cubic yards of soil. The field sampling will begin at the center of that area of the site and continue until soils are consistently below 4,000 ppm lead and no longer pose a risk of being characteristically hazardous. The same protocol (minimum of one sample per 50 cubic yards) will be observed for fill materials encountered beneath the concrete areas of the site due to the lack of adequate sampling density in these areas. During on-site remedial activities the area in the vicinity of 8-TP-12 will be further assessed through at least two additional test pits.
