Knowledge Application. Xxx et al., (2018) state that knowledge application entails using the new knowledge to make a change. This change could be behavioural, such as changing a way of working (Xxx et al., 2018), or cognitive, for example through deepening understanding or amending a mental framework (Xxxxx, 1991). According to Figure 6, the stage is also called ‘use’ (Xxxxx & Xxxxxxx, 2001; Xxxxx & Xxx, 2015, Navimipour & Xxxxxxxx, 2016), utilisation (Xxx at al, 2005, Xxxxx & Xxxx, 2009) and exploitation (Xxxxx & Xxxx, 2005). It is through the application of knowledge that knowledge management overlaps with organisational learning. As King (2009) asserts, “organisational learning is the goal of knowledge management” (p5). This is because if knowledge management is enacted effectively, it can make organisational learning more effective (Xxx et al., 2018). In my opinion, organisational learning is part of the application stage of the knowledge management process and entails its own processes of learning, such as looped learning and theories of action. Therefore, this is discussed in the next section.
Knowledge Application. As noted above, a key part of SALT’s Year 4 strategy is applying the knowledge that has been created. Application is when available knowledge is used to make decisions and perform tasks through direction and routines12. Direction refers to the process through which the individual possessing the knowledge directs the action of another individual without transferring to that individual the knowledge underlying the direction (e.g., calling an expert to solve a problem based on the instructions given by the expert). Routines involve the utilization of knowledge embedded in procedures, rules, norms, and processes that guide future behavior (e.g., design of policy, etc.). The following activities will advance knowledge application. See also the uptake of the Comprehensive eCDT Principles described previously.
