– Risks of X radiography Is medical imaging risky? The following risks of medical imaging (and more particularly, X‐radiography) are mentioned:  Overdose in a single exposure  Over‐irradiation due to repeated imaging  Sensitivity of certain organs. Figure 15: Lay mental model fragment –Risks of medical imaging While recognized as risky, medical applications of radiation also provides identified benefits. Interviewees see radiation in medical applications as an ally in prevention, diagnosis and treatment, offering the possibility to vanquish disease. The healing factor here triumphs and risk is seen as under control. Interviewees expressed a good level of confidence in both the technology and the personnel (prescribing doctor and manipulators). What are possible effects in case of overdose or repeated exposure? The following effects are cited:  Short term: xxxxx  Long term: cancer  Damage to or influence on cells and their evolution  Damage to particular organs with specific pathological outcomes: ovaries, resulting in sterility; kidney, resulting in failure and the need for dialysis or organ replacement. Overdose and over‐irradiation are words used by both lay public and expert interviewees. Experts speak more explicitly of the risk of human error and refer to the Epinal accident in which a long series of patients suffered over‐irradiation during their course of radiation therapy. The experts also mention similar impacts (xxxxx, cell damage) while giving more detailed explanation (DNA damage) and linking effects to exposure (low or high doses of radiation) and techniques. Are certain populations more vulnerable to risks of medical imaging? All interviewees agree that children and pregnant women (because they carry a fœtus) are particularly at risk. Some state it firmly at the outset, others come to this conclusion by reviewing their representations of how radiation can affect the human body. Most come to the conclusion that the developing organism is particularly vulnerable and that its rapidly developing cells and therefore organs are at greater risk. Experts highlighted individual radiosensitivity and antecedents: « Even adults may show individual radiosensitivity, meaning that people are more or less sensitive, just as they are for plenty of things. Adult or child, each of us has a greater or lesser capacity to regenerate our DNA, or for our healthy cells to win out over destructive cells, etc. At the same dose, two different persons won't react in the same w...
