Split Specimen. In drug testing, a part of the urine specimen that is sent to a primary laboratory and retained unopened, and is transported to a second laboratory in the event that the employee requests that it be tested following a verified positive test of the primary specimen or a verified adulterated or substituted test result.

Split Specimen. All testing under this policy shall be conducted at federally certified laboratories selected by the Board. The Board will arrange for its collection sites to do split specimen urine collection in the drug and alcohol testing process to facilitate appropriate re-testing. All drug and/or alcohol positive tests shall be confirmed by a second test. If the test results are positive for drugs and/or alcohol, the employee may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including discharge.
Split Specimen. If an employee disputes a positive test result, and requests a split specimen within seventy- two (72) hours of notification by the MRO, the employer shall provide a second testing from a different certified laboratory. The Board shall pay for the costs of both tests.
Split Specimen. If the test result of the primary specimen is positive, the employee may request that the MRO direct that the split specimen be tested in a different lab certified by the Department of Health and Human Services for presence of drugs. The employee will be responsible for payment of testing the split specimen. The MRO will direct the second test provided the employee makes the request within 72 hours of being notified of a positive test result. At this time, the employee should also contact his/her immediate supervisor/manager and advise them of the verified positive test result and the request for the split specimen test. If the drug test results of the split specimen do not confirm the results of the primary test, the MRO will cancel the primary test and report such cancellation and the reasons for it to the employee and his/her supervisor/manager.
