Study area and surroundings. Xxxxxxx Lake (also known as Xxxxx Lake and Lake Garrett) is an approximately 4.2 acre lake located in Lakewood Park in White Center, Washington, which is located in unincorporated King County (see Figure 1). The area is currently fully developed with a mixture of residential and commercial uses. There are a number of government housing facilities within the catchment basin. Most of these originally dated back to World War II, but are currently undergoing renovation and revitalization. Commercial areas date back to the 1920s and 30s, but much of the growth also dates to World War II. While there are several streets that host small businesses such as coffee shops, restaurants and retail stores, there are also multiple businesses dealing with car repair and other businesses that can generate pollutants in stormwater A WDOE financed project to retrofit a number of older stormwater facilities has recently been completed, including renovation of two stormwater detention facilities in the watershed, the construction and maintenance of a bioswale immediately before stormwater enters the lake, and the installation of a pump to divert stormwater away from the lake that entered directly from school ball fields to the south that have no intervening detention or water quality treatment. The project also financed a program of detecting and repairing illicit connections to the stormwater conveyance system, which is particularly problematic in White Center because stormwater is currently conveyed through the original combined sewer system, making the possibility of missed connections much higher than in systems built solely for stormwater conveyance.
