Vertebrate Animals. In the event that activities set forth in the Milestones and Timeline involve the use of vertebrate animals, Grantee shall ensure that all performance sites hold Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW)-approved assurances. In accepting a Grant involving vertebrate animal use in activities set forth in the Milestones and Timeline, Grantee warrants that, prior to their commencement, such activities shall be reviewed and approved by [Add name of oversight body here] as compliant with federal, state, and local government regulations to humanely, efficiently, effectively and legally use live vertebrate animals in research. Vertebrate Animals. The committee will evaluate the involvement of live vertebrate animals as part of the scientific assessment according to the following criteria: (1) description of proposed procedures involving animals, including species, strains, ages, sex, and total number to be used; (2) justifications for the use of animals versus alternative models and for the appropriateness of the species proposed; (3) interventions to minimize discomfort, distress, pain and injury; and (4) justification for euthanasia method if NOT consistent with the AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals. Reviewers will assess the use of chimpanzees as they would any other application proposing the use of vertebrate animals. In the event that completion of the Milestones and Timeline involve the use of vertebrate animals, Grantee shall ensure that all performance sites hold Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW)-approved assurances. In accepting an award involving vertebrate animal use in completing the Milestones and Timeline, Grantee warrants that it has a system that complies with federal, state, and local government regulations to humanely, efficiently, effectively and legally use live vertebrate animals in research and that the work to be performed in completing the Milestones and Timeline has been reviewed and approved by the applicable animal use and care oversight bodies. Grantee shall provide documentation of review and approval by the applicable oversight bodies of all vertebrate animal work performed in completing the Milestones and Timeline in a timely fashion upon request of Grantor.

Should warm-blooded animals be used in this project, the University will comply with the applicable portions of the Animal Welfare Act (P.L. 99-158) and will follow the guidelines prescribed in the Public Health Services Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The University’s Animal Care and Use program does not conduct studies subject to the FDA Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations. As a result, nonclinical studies conducted at this University are not GLP studies. Since the University does not incorporate GLP into its standard animal care, results obtained from animal studies at the University cannot be described as GLP compliant and should not be so described in applications to the FDA or in other documents.

CWRU’s Animal Care and Use program does not conduct studies subject to the FDA Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations. As a result, nonclinical studies conducted at CWRU are not GLP studies. Since CWRU does not incorporate GLP into its standard animal care, results obtained from animal studies at CWRU cannot be described as GLP compliant and should not be so described in applications to the FDA or in other documents.
Vertebrate Animals. If this project involves the use of vertebrate animals, the Recipient is required to comply, as applicable, with the Animal Welfare Act as amended, and implementing regulations (7 USC 2131 et seq., 9 CFR parts 1, 2, and 3), and other Federal Statutes and regulations relating to animals. If vertebrate animals are involved, the Principal Investigator shall submit to the ATP Program Manager:
(1) A completed Extramural Animal Study Proposal Form (NIST-1258), with singed approvals by the International Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
(2) Copies of other governmental approvals for Recipient's animal care and use procedures and showing the current status of Recipient's assurance by the Public Health Service/National Institutes of Health (PHS/NIH), and copies of animal care facility accreditation.
(3) Certification that the Principal Investigator and other personnel involved in the care and use of the animals are trained as required by NIST and the PHS/NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. -------------------------------------------------------- The Recipient must inform the ATP Program Manager in writing of any proposed deviation from procedures involving animals described Form NIST-1258, any change in personnel and their training, and change in the status of their PHS/NIH assurance or other government inspecting bodies; and the results of any inspections of their animal care facilities that take place during the course of the award.
