Concrete Removal. Concrete washout material is present across much of Site #8 to depths ranging from 1 to 10 feet below ground surface. Much of this concrete will remain in place. However, concrete removal may take place to level an area for a potential parking area on the west portion of the site and to provide a surface water drainage channel through the site pending further analysis under a public improvement plan. Concrete will be broken out by the contractor and crushed on site to the desired size for use as rip-rap, trail base, or fill/cover material. Crushed concrete intended for reuse as trail base will be crushed to approximately 1.5-1.75 inches minus. Concrete to be reused on site will be sampled at a frequency of one sample per 500 cubic yards for RCRA 8 metals. Figure 7 shows the conceptual final grading plan being evaluated.
Concrete Removal. Remove all deteriorated concrete in the designated repair area to a minimum depth of 2 inches and a maximum depth of half of the slab thickness. Saw cut the perimeter of the repair area to a minimum depth of 2 inches. Remove the existing concrete within the repair area to a minimum depth of 2 inches. Use a chipping hammer weighing not more than 35 pounds. Operate the chipping hammer at a 30 – 60 degree angle to remove damaged concrete without causing additional damage, and to create a rough surface for proper bonding. Cut and remove any reinforcement in jointed reinforced concrete pavement that is exposed after the removal of delaminated concrete. Do not cut or remove the reinforcement in continuously reinforced concrete pavement. Do not disturb concrete outside the limits of the repair area. If the partial-depth repair area becomes a full-depth concrete pavement patch due to excessive, unnecessary removal of concrete, or damage to the dowel bars during the concrete removal process; construct a full-depth concrete pavement patch as specified in Section 516 at no additional cost to the Commission. If dowel bars in the transverse joint are exposed and show little sign of corrosion or other damage, apply a bond breaking material to all exposed surfaces of these bars. When the Representative determines the dowel bars are unacceptable due to misalignment of extensive deterioration construct a full-depth concrete pavement patch as specified in Section 516. Resound the repair area in the presence of the Representative to ensure that all delaminated concrete has been removed. Remove any additional delaminated concrete as necessary within the repair area, but do not exceed half the slab thickness. Sand-blast any edge created by sawing in order to create a rough surface for material bond. Use air blasting as the final cleaning method within 30 minutes before placing the partial- depth repair material. Use a hot-compressed air xxxxx, free of oil, moisture, and other contaminants, and that has a minimum pressure of 100 pounds per square inch measured at the source. Re-clean areas not repaired within 30 minutes of the final cleaning.
