Stockmanship is regarded as one of the most important factors in ensuring animal health and the key factor in ensuring animal welfare.  All stock-keepers need to be aware of the benefits of keeping stock within their care in a vital and healthy condition with a keen eye on their animals’ welfare.  Ensure that animals are kept at their healthiest has a direct benefit on productivity and therefore, farm profitability.  Reduce morbidity and mortality rates has a number of additional benefits including resource efficiency which has an important part to play in sustainable food production. Often, animal welfare improvements go hand in hand with an increase in productivity and efficiency. There is a need to focus on prevention rather than cure both in terms of disease and animal welfare challenges. This can be achieved by:  Farmers developing and implementing animal health and welfare plans with the advice from their veterinarian,  Building on their existing knowledge and skills.  Advances in scientific knowledge are ongoing and this knowledge provides benefits to famers, livestock and the environment.  Translating scientific advances into practice helps ensure that best practice is implemented across the whole farming sector and ensures that benefits can be realised.
