Religious Exemption. 21. If an employee in a classification covered by this agreement sincerely holds religious beliefs that include conscientious objections to joining or financially supporting a labor organization, the employee shall not be required to pay the service fee. In lieu of paying the service fee, the employee shall pay a charitable contribution equal to the service fee to one of the three following charitable organizations: (1) United Way of the Bay Area, (2) Community Health Charities of California (San Francisco/East Bay Branch), or (3) Local Independent Charities. The charitable-contribution shall be paid in the amounts and at the times the service fee would otherwise be paid if the employee were not exempt under this paragraph. The employee shall provide the City and the Union with an acknowledgement of receipt from the charitable organization or other satisfactory evidence that the charitable contribution has been paid.
