Study Eligibility Criteria. The systematic review study protocol was registered with PROSPERO registration system to maintain a permanent record of the systematic review and avoid unplanned changes and enable comparison (registration number 57792). Since earlier systematic reviews looking at service user and caregiver involvement in the mental health systems in LMICs presented few papers and evidence weak in general; a limited number of pertinent resources was anticipated. Therefore in addition to peer-reviewed journal papers; grey literature such as books, reports, website materials, training materials were included in a systematic review. As discussed in Chapter 2, ‘involvement’ is a multi-faceted concept with different meaning in different contexts. Service user involvement is globally most varied term which is often used synonymous with participation, engagement and collaboration etc. In addition, many researchers have attempted to differentiate service user involvement as direct or indirect, individual or collective and proactive and reactive. The primary focus was to review and examine the evidence that presented ‘direct’ service user- caregiver or community member involvement in the Indian mental health system and not indirect involvement. The review included evidence of individual or collective, proactive or reactive involvement as long as it was direct involvement of service users, caregivers and members of community in the mental health system in India. The original criterion was to include only data-based studies assessing service user, caregiver and community member involvement in the aforementioned components of the mental health system in India. While framing search strategy it was envisaged that many studies may present involvement in a narrative report manner. Hence narrative studies were also included in the review. Since the systematic review is limited to the Indian context, papers written in English language were included. India has 23 official languages and English language listed as foreign language. Yet almost all the published scientific and non-scientific literature in India is available in English language. If were to include these 23 languages (includes Hindi language) especially for grey literature (books and website materials); it would have been difficult to translate the results to English language.
