Teaching Assignments. A. Teachers shall not be assigned, except temporarily, and for good cause, outside the scope of their teaching certificates. B. The District shall use its best efforts to notify teachers of their tentative assignments for the following school year by June 1 and, in any event, prior to the close of the current school year. Such notices shall include the school to which the teacher will be assigned, and the grade and subjects which he or she will teach. The District shall have the right to solicit an unlimited number of volunteers to teach a sixth period. Such teachers shall be compensated at the yearly rate of $6,083 effective July 1, 2011. The District shall also have the right to assign up to four (4) teachers per year to a sixth period at the same rate of compensation so long as such assignment does not eliminate the position of any full-time teacher. There shall be no more than two (2) mandatory sixth assignments per department. Whenever possible, the District shall rotate such involuntary assignments so they shall not occur in two consecutive years. F. The District may solicit volunteers annually to perform lunchroom, recess and bus duty supervisory assignments. (h) Upon request of the employee, principals shall use its best efforts to vary the assignments of any employee who has consistently been assigned a majority of low-ability students/classes, special education teachers excepted. Teaching Assignments. A. Teachers Section 1: Precollege Division faculty members will be assigned studio lessons in the following manner: a. Absent a request from the student to change teachers, faculty members will continue to teach their students from the prior year. b. Faculty members will then be offered any returning students who wish to transfer into their studio. (A “Change of Teacher Request Form” must be completed and approved.) c. Faculty members will then be offered any newly accepted students who request that faculty member as a “first choice.” d. If a newly accepted student’s first choice teacher already has 8 hours of work on Saturday, then the first choice teacher will be asked if he/she would like to teach students (the new student or returning students) outside the regular Saturday School hours of operation. If either the student(s) and/or the teacher does not want to have the studio lesson outside the regular Saturday School hours of operation, the School will assign the “second choice” teacher, repeating the process used for the first choice teacher (and then repeating again, if necessary, for the “third” and “fourth” choice). Section 2: At its discretion, the School may make assignments of chamber groups, elective courses, and studio lessons (where students decline to request a specific teacher or in the case of chamber groups, all students cannot agree on a specific teacher, or the requested teacher(s) are unavailable), provided the following conditions are met for all non-probationary teachers who are qualified for the available assignments: a. There was nothing in the teacher’s evaluation (as per Article XVI Evaluation/Teaching Observation) that raises any concerns that s/he would be unable to complete the assignments(s) in a way that maintains the School’s standards of pedagogical excellence. Any such concerns shall be communicated to the teacher. b. The teacher has not had a formal written warning or suspension in either of the past 2 semesters. c. Any teacher whose workload would otherwise be 3 hours or less has been offered at least one additional assignment. Such assignments shall be offered first to those who otherwise would have the fewest hours (i.e., 0, then 1, then 2, etc.), and then on the basis of seniority. d. Any teacher who declines an offer of work in one year shall not be assignedentitled to additional offers in that year (e.g., except temporarilya teacher who declines a chamber group shall not be entitled to be offered an additional elective or a studio lesson) but s/he shall also not be precluded from again being offered work in the following year, provided that s/he still meets the conditions set forth in a., b., and for good cause, outside the scope of their teaching certificates.c. Teaching Assignments. A. Preference Forms (High School) 1. Teachers shall be provided with standardized teaching assignment preference forms at the same time class estimates are distributed. These forms shall include a place for homeroom preference, optional duties, grade level assignment, plus a separate section for supplementary positions normally recommended for appointment from within the school. a. Study halls will count as a choice in the preference course selection process. Cafeteria and assignments for which supplementary contracts are needed will not count as selections in the preference course selection process. Teachers will be precluded from the selection of study halls if such selection would result in the need for additional staff. b. Study halls will not be assignedassigned to a teacher in the science, except temporarilymath, social studies or English departments if such assignment causes a significant increase in the teacher-student ratio of the other department members; or if the assignment results in three (3) non-course assignment class periods. c. Participation in the preference process shall be limited to those who have taught at least three (3) classes in a department within a single school, or will be teaching three classes/units in a department. d. Teachers who do not comply with the three (3) class/ unit rule will be assigned departmental courses still available after regular department members have their full assignments. This provision shall apply to study halls and for good causeoptional duties. e. All teachers, outside the scope regardless of their current assignment, who have been notified of a transfer to a different school will have the privilege of filing a preference form for teaching certificatesassignments at that school if the preference process has not been completed. Otherwise, teaching preference provisions may not be applicable until the following school year. B. The District f. Preference forms shall use its best efforts be completed in both the receiving and sending schools if the transferee to notify teachers of their tentative the sending school is unknown. 2. Teaching assignments for the following ensuing school year shall be based on preference forms submitted to each teacher by June 1 andApril 15, in any eventand assignments shall conform to the procedures below. a. Principal shall submit the number of courses and/ or sections for each department to each department chairperson along with the preference forms. b. The department chairpersons shall then meet with their department for the purpose of distributing teaching assignment preference forms and estimates to the department members. c. Within fifteen (15) days after April 15, each department chairperson shall meet with each department for the purpose of constructing tentative class assignments. Teachers who fail to file a preference form prior to this departmental meeting shall be excluded from the close assignment process. These meetings must be announced at least three (3) calendar days in advance, however. Preference forms must be available for inspection at the departmental meeting and copies must be provided to the principal who will keep all preferences in a place available to any teacher at the school. d. Every effort shall be made to construct a department schedule that equitably distributes course, grade, honors, and grouping assignments. If changes in such circumstances regarding teacher schedule assignments are made relatively equal, or if conflicts exist after the close of the school yearabove meetings have been held, each teacher affected will be notified in writing by a letter directed to his or her address of record with the District. C. Teachers being involuntarily transferred departmental seniority shall be notified of the positions available in their tenure areadetermining factor. Such teachers may request the positions, in order of preference, to which they desire to be transferred. Their preference may be a primary factor considered in making the transfer. The District has full discretion to make the final determination on issues involving involuntary transfers. D. No teacher (in Grades 7 to 12) shall have, without his or her consent, more than five teaching periods a day or more than three separate subject matter preparations. No teacher below 7th grade shall have, without his or her consent, more than six teaching periods per day. Courses entitled "Advanced," "Regents," "General" or "Practical" are separate subject matter preparations. When two courses have different titles, but substantially the same curriculum and materials, the subject matter preparations for these courses are the same. An accelerated course is not a separate subject matter preparation from the related RS course. Basic math and skill labs are single subject matter preparations regardless of grade level. E. Within the definitions of D above and when unforeseen circumstances warrant (Grades 7 to 12), the District may assign a fourth subject matter preparation to be compensated at $1,217 effective July 1, 2011.
