Faculty Workload. The workload of faculty includes student advising, maintaining and improving expertise in a discipline and in pedagogy, serving on departmental and university committees, contributing to student growth and development, evaluating student performance, scholarly activities, and service to university and community, as well as teaching and class preparation. Additionally, as a professional, a faculty member shall devote a substantial amount of the faculty member’s workload to course preparation, research, the maintenance of professional expertise, innovations in teaching/learning and other similar activities. These endeavors shall comprise the faculty member’s workload. Subd. 1. A faculty member’s teaching load shall not exceed fourteen (14) undergraduate credit hours per semester nor twenty-four (24) undergraduate credit hours per academic year. Nine- month faculty are subject to these same workload limitations. a. For purposes of calculating teaching load, a three (3) credit graduate course shall be the equivalent of a four (4) credit undergraduate course, and a four (4) credit graduate course shall be the equivalent of a five (5) credit undergraduate course. Faculty Workload. 8.2.1 The Department mean of student contact hours per Faculty Employee exclusive of the Manager shall not exceed twenty (20) hours per week in any term. No individual Faculty Employee shall have contact hours in excess of twenty-two (22) hours per week in any term, except by mutual agreement of the Parties, with concurrence of the Department concerned, in terms where a high attrition rate is expected. 8.2.2 Assigned Faculty activities other than student contact hours shall not exceed traditional levels unless agreed by the Employee, the Manager, the Xxxx and the Union. 8.2.3 A Faculty Employee who is scheduled for an average of fifteen (15) class contact hours per week for teaching Faculty, or thirty-five (35) duty hours per week for Specialized Faculty, shall be considered full-time. 8.2.4 Faculty Employees with less than an average of fifteen (15) class contact hours per week or thirty-five (35) duty hours per week respectively may be considered by mutual agreement of the Parties to have a partial workload. Any other provision of this Agreement notwithstanding, no full-time Employee shall be changed to part-time status except by mutual agreement of the Parties and the Employee. 8.2.5 In addition to the normal fifteen (15) class contact hours per week, Faculty Employees are expected to be available for student consultation by office hours or by appointment. Normally a minimum of five (5) student contact hours per week should be scheduled for this purpose. A schedule should be posted. 8.2.6 Departments will make every reasonable effort to ensure that individual Faculty Employees are assigned no more than an average of fifteen (15) class contact hours per week over the course of an academic year. Where this average is not achieved, the Department will develop a workload plan that will result in the Faculty Employee working an average of fifteen (15) class contact hours over the two academic year period concluding with the completion of the next academic year. 8.2.7 Student/Staff Ratios 8.2.7.1 Student/Staff ratios as they exist at the end of terms 1 and 3, 1975 shall be jointly examined and, by mutual agreement, improved where necessary to maintain a satisfactory learning environment or to provide more equitable workload in the Institute. 8.2.7.2 Agreement on alterations of workload (which includes Student/Staff ratios) shall be negotiated by the Labour/Management Committee.
Faculty Workload. ‌ The following factors (in addition to other appropriate factors) may be considered when making workload assignments: total number of students, number and nature of course preparations and student need. The instructional workload for full-time probationary and tenured faculty shall normally fall within the range of 30 to 32 credits per academic year. The instructional assignment for a full-time probationary or tenured faculty member shall normally not exceed 750 hours per year. It is recognized that the instructional workload of some full-time faculty may be less than 30 to 32 credits when there are additional non-instructional assignments. Faculty teaching more than thirty-two (32) credits or 750 hours per year shall be eligible for overload compensation in accordance with Section 10.6 or a reduction in non-instructional assignments at the discretion of the campus administration.

The normal components of the faculty member’s workload are instruction, scholarly activity and service, with a standard responsibility “weighting” of 60%/20%/20% committed to each component, respectively. The average faculty workload practices of the various departments/programs in the recent past shall remain in effect for the duration of this Agreement. 15.5 The Administration recognizes the central fact, common to all institutions of higher education, that, generally, one (1) hour of scheduled instruction by a faculty member requires several hours of instruction-related work that takes place outside the classroom. This includes preparation and ongoing revision of teaching material, remaining professionally up to date, as well as being available to students both through scheduled office hours and other traditional methods of student-faculty contact. These activities are expected of all faculty members and are taken into account in the assignment of instructional workloads. 15.6 The regularly scheduled instructional workload as described in Sections 15.1 through 15.5 may include such nonscheduled instruction as the supervision of internships, fieldwork, dissertations and theses, external degree contracts and competencies, honors projects, independent study programs, instruction in special programs and direction and/or coordination of laboratories and/or multi-sectional courses. Faculty Workload. 15.10 A faculty member shall be assigned courses to teach in their area(s) of expertise as much as possible. An individual faculty member's rank, status and seniority shall not be the controlling factors in said assignment of courses. 15.11 The Administration recognizes the contribution that can be made by the faculty regarding the development of faculty teaching schedules. Accordingly, within assigned section and space allocations, faculty teaching schedules shall be developed at the department/program level in accordance with procedures established within said department/program and subject to the approval of the department chair, where applicable. These procedures shall insure that each affected faculty member shall have prior and reasonable consultation regarding their schedule. These schedules shall then be submitted to the appropriate Xxxx or designee for approval. If the Xxxx or designee wishes to revise the schedule developed by the department/program: (a) an opportunity will be provided for discussion with the department chair; and (b) reasons shall be provided and they shall not be arbitrary or capricious. 15.12 In determining instructional workloads, the faculty member's research commitment, service contributions and prior instructional workload shall be taken into account to determine whether these warrant adjustment of instructional workload. 15.13 Faculty members on active appointment are expected to participate in: (a) student orientation, (b) advising, and (c) commencement. 15.14 During the first week of classes, each faculty member shall, in each course taught, provide a copy of his or her syllabus to his or her department chair and all students in thecourse.

Faculty Workload. A. Full-time Members of the Instructional Staff 1. a. Except as otherwise provided in Section A 1.c. of this Article, a full-time member of the instructional staff shall be required to teach a maximum of fifteen (15) credit or equivalent contact hours per semester, requiring no more than three (3) separate course preparations, and shall perform all duties related to teaching including the submission of grades and reports, shall fulfill proctoring requirements, shall keep no fewer than three (3) scheduled office hours per week in order to counsel students and shall serve on faculty or other College committees, if given the opportunity. In addition, faculty shall be required to be available up to two (2) hours per week, by appointment, if required by students’ classroom schedules. (2) Department Chairpersons in departments requiring the supervision of laboratories shall teach as part of their required teaching load a maximum of nine (9) contact hours per semester even if the number of faculty members is fewer than ten (10).
