Compassionate reasons definition

Compassionate reasons is defined as the critical illness or death of a parent, child, wife, husband, sister, brother, grandparent or parent-in-law.
Compassionate reasons means: (i) attendance at a funeral; (ii) accompanying a member of the employee's immediate family for medical or dental attention. For the purpose of this section, immediate family shall be defined as spouse, child, father and mother of the employee; (iii) birth of a child; (iv) arrival home of a newborn or adopted child; (v) appointment with legal counsel; (vi) where an employee has made every reasonable effort to reach his place of employment or any other accessible Board school, but is prevented due to inclement weather; or (vii) unforeseeable travel difficulties directly related to returned to work following an absence from work. It is understood that except in circumstances beyond the control of the employee, namely the circumstances described in (i), (iii), (iv), (vi) and (vii) above, no compassionate leave shall be granted on a day immediately preceding or following a statutory holiday or school break period. Where an employee has exhausted his compassionate leave, the Board may allow an employee up to three (3) unpaid days upon approval of the Director of Education. (c) An employee may be granted, upon written notification one week prior, personal leave with pay to a maximum of two (2) days per school year with the necessity of explanation. No more than one employee from any school may be away on personal leave days at any one time. Personal leave will not be granted immediately preceding or following a statutory holiday or school break period. (d) Approval for compassionate leave must be obtained from the Director of Education. The Director of Education reserves the right to request, in confidence, documentation in support of the request for leave in (a), (b) or (c) above.
