Bereavement Days. 256 The University grants eligible Employees paid time off to attend the funeral and/or make necessary arrangements when a death occurs in the Employee's immediate family. -257 Regular staff working half time or more are eligible for bereavement leave upon the date of hire, rehire or change to regular status of half time or more. -258 Up to three (3) bereavement days will be allowed in the case of death of the Employee's: Spouse Grandparents Father-in-law Child Grandchild Mother-in-law Brother Half-Brother Son-in-law Sister Half-Sister Daughter-in-law Parents Step-Parents Brother-in-law Other Eligible Individual Grandparents-in-law Sister-in-law Up to two (2) additional days of accrued vacation, personal leave or compensatory time may be used in the case of the death of a member of the Employee’s household. Should such leave be exhausted, unpaid leave may be used. Additional time, if required, may be granted in accordance with other leave policies. -259 The supervisor may require proof of death and relationship to the deceased before approving payment. A maximum of eight (8) hours' pay may be made for each day of absence. This benefit is payable only to active Employees whose absence from work is due to the death in the Employee's family and will not be paid in lieu of other types of paid leave. -260 Part-time Employees will be paid only for the hours scheduled to work but not worked because of the death. -261 Allowed bereavement days may be taken any time during the period including the day of death and the day following the funeral. -262 The supervisor may grant permission to a reasonable number of Employees to attend the funeral or serve as pallbearers for a deceased Employee or former Employee, without loss of pay.

The employee must take the bereavement leave within thirty (30) calendar days of the death of the immediate family member, unless the teacher requests and is granted special consideration by the Superintendent or designee for a later date up to a year following the death. Any unused days after that date will no longer be available for use.
(b) In case of death in the immediate family of an employee covered by this contract, the employee is entitled to be absent up to (5) school days without loss of compensation for the purpose of attending the last burial rites and for grieving the loss of, parents, step parents, father-in-law Child Grandchild Motherlaw, mother-in-law Brother Halflaw, brother, sister, daughter-Brother Sonin law, son-in-law Sister Half-Sister Daughterlaw, brother-in-law Parents Step-Parents Brotherlaw, sister-in-law Other Eligible Individual Grandparents-in-law Sister-in-law Up to two law, grandparent, grandchild, and any other relative who at the time of death was living as a member of the employee's household. The employee must take the bereavement leave within thirty (230) additional calendar days of accrued vacationthe death of the immediate family member. Any unused days after that date will no longer be available for use. If the death occurs during the time period from the first day of summer break through the date one week from the first teacher day of the school year, personal this section does not apply unless the person is employed by the school corporation to teach summer school. In the case of summer school, a day of leave is a scheduled workday regardless of the number of hours per day that an employee is assigned. If the death occurs within one (1) week of the beginning of school, the employee may use any or compensatory time may be used in all of these days within thirty (30) days of the death.
(c) In case of the death of a member of the Employee’s household. Should such leave be exhaustedan uncle, unpaid leave may be used. Additional timeaunt, if requiredcousin, may be granted in accordance with other leave policies. -259 The supervisor may require proof of death and relationship to the deceased before approving payment. A maximum of eight (8) hours' pay may be made for each day of absence. This benefit is payable only to active Employees whose absence from work is due to the death living in the Employeeemployee's family and will not household, the teacher is entitled to be paid in lieu of other types of paid leave. -260 Part-time Employees will be paid only for the hours scheduled to work but not worked because of the death. -261 Allowed bereavement days may be taken any time during the period including the absent one (1) day of death and the day following the funeral. -262 The supervisor may grant permission to a reasonable number of Employees to attend the funeral or serve as pallbearers for a deceased Employee or former Employee, without loss of paycompensation. In addition, a teacher may use one (1) day of sick leave under this provision. The procedures governing the use of this day are the same as those outlined in Section 5.4 (a).
