British Sign Language. In Britain, the most common form of Sign Language is called British Sign Language (BSL), which has its own grammatical structure and syntax. As a language it is not dependent nor is it strongly related to spoken English. BSL is the preferred language of around 145,000 people within the UK (2011). In 2003 BSL was recognised by the UK government as an official minority language. This has led to increased funding for the needs of the communication of people who are deaf, and an increased awareness of the language which now has a similar status to that of other minority national languages, such as Gaelic and Welsh. Staff have received Deaf Awareness training, in partnership with Deaf Action Scotland. In relation to future plans we are currently exploring how the college can contribute to recognise the needs of people who are deaf and how we can increase awareness, particularly for new staff.

The College has amended the coordination of these Sensory Support services in line with the Government’s BSL Strategy and has published its BSL Action Plan.
British Sign Language. The university’s BSL plan is now complete and approved. The document and the BSL translation are available on the British Sign Language page on the university’s website. The BSL Working Group will continue to meet and review our BSL action plan to ensure its successful implementation. The plan sets out how we hope to encourage BSL users to attend university and to strengthen the support available to them. Key actions include: • Encourage applicants to declare they are a BSL user • Review key information to be translated into BSL • Encourage key staff to participate in deaf awareness training • Investigate how to make extra-curricular activities more inclusive The number, availability and cost of interpreters continues to be a concern within the Highlands and Islands to support students who are BSL. We share the concern in the sector about how to identify appropriately qualified interpreters. In the Highlands, there are approx. six and there does not appear to be any on the Western Isles. The Scottish Government needs to invest in the training of interpreters to increase the numbers if we are to adequately meet the needs of BSL users.
British Sign Language. UWS published a British Sign Language Plan in BSL and English (xxxxx://xxx.xxx.xx.xx/about-uws/uws- commitments/equality-diversity/), as required by the BSL (Scotland) Act 2015. The BSL plan was developed through two community consultation events, the first in partnership with Renfrewshire Council and the NHSGGC and the second was a joint initiative with colleges and universities in the West of Scotland, which was held at Deaf Connections, Glasgow.
