Commercial Fisheries Sample Clauses

Commercial Fisheries. There has been some interest expressed in commercial marine fishing (emphasis on crabs). Some exploratory fishing licenses have been issued by DFO, but fishing has not been undertaken yet. DFO is not allowing commercial gillnet fisheries at this time. DFO Western Arctic Area is responsible for environmental assessment and regulation in the NWT and the Yukon North Slope. If projects are proposed in the Yukon North Slope, they will be regulated by DFO in the same way as those in the Mackenzie Delta/ Beaufort Region. The regulatory regime is much more stringent today than during the last oil and gas boom. Environmental assessment under the CEAA and IFA is required. The main federal players are Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), National Energy Board (NEB), Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Environment Canada (EC), and Parks Canada. ➢ 3-D marine (offshore) using airguns ➢ 2-D riverine using airguns ➢ Geotechnical investigationsRoad construction ➢ Land-based seismic ➢ Exploratory xxxxx (including proposed offshore) The mooring of the Single Steel Drilling Xxxxxxx (SSDC) off Xxxxxxxx Island is the only oil and gas project off the Yukon North Slope that DFO has had to regulate this decade. ➢ Avoidance of traditional harvest areas ➢ Timing to avoid migrations ➢ Make sure footprint isn’t over important habitat ➢ Pre-, during and post- development monitoring ➢ Shutdown zones and/or shutdown times ➢ Spill plans ➢ Winter work

Commercial Fisheries. Commercial fishing in the lower Arctic is an important part of the Norwegian and Greenland economies, bringing in significant revenue. Norway established a fishery protection zone around Svalbard in 1977, in which fish stocks are protected and only those individuals who have been given permission by the Norwegian government are allowed to fish in those waters (NMFCA 2013). Although aquaculture activities take place in the waters of mainland Norway, no aquaculture activities occur in Svalbard (NMFCA 2013) and no aquaculture occurs in the waters of Greenland.
Commercial Fisheries. The major fishing industry in Greenland is the shrimp industry, which mainly takes place off the East Greenland coast. In 2010, 67,157 tons of shrimp were harvested (Statistics Greenland 2010). The major fishing industry in Svalbard/Norway is the xxxxxxx industry, and in 2011, 633,103 tons were landed (Statistics Norway 2013). The low level of the ACOBAR acoustic sources combined with the long intervals between transmissions, placement of the sources in the water column, and geography preclude the ACOBAR Experiment from impacting any commercial fishing activities.
