Definition of Paraprofessional. For the purpose of this Article, a "Paraprofessional" shall be defined as a person who assists classroom teachers and other certificated personnel in Instructional Paraprofessional, Migrant Services Paraprofessional, Early Childhood Education Paraprofessional - Migrant Education, Secondary School Advisor, Educational Braille Interpreter, Braille Transcriber and Educational Sign Language Interpreter. Bargaining unit members hired prior to January 1, 2002, shall have until January 8, 2006, to complete all the requirements under the Act. Should the Act or federal regulations be amended to change the effective date that Paraeducators, as defined above, must be qualified under the Act, bargaining members shall have until this new date to complete all requirements under the Act. 1189 Any bargaining unit employee whose position does not fulfill the criteria as defined in 1190 this section shall be exempt from the terms of this article and shall not be required to fulfill 1191 educational or proficiency requirements under the Act.

Definition of Paraprofessional. Unless otherwise indicated the term paraprofessional when used in this agreement, shall refer to all those employees who work under the direction of a certificated teacher or administrator. Rights, privileges, benefits included in this agreement are structured for full-time paraprofessionals. Part-time paraprofessionals are to receive part-time benefits in proportion to their employment. For example a half-time paraprofessional receives half-time benefits; this is exclusive of health coverage (see Article IV HEALTH COVERAGE).
