Procedures for Granting Sick Leave. In order to be granted sick time, the employee or a designee must notify that employee's department head or supervisor 1 1/2 hours prior to the employee's reporting time for work, except in cases of proven inability to furnish such notice. An employee is entitled to take up to five (5) consecutive sick days without the necessity of submitting a doctor's excuse, except, the University may require a physician's excuse in support of any request for sick time, provided the employee involved has been notified in writing on the occasion of his/her last prior absence for sickness or injury that such evidence might be required for any future request for sick time. Absences greater than five (5) consecutive working days (i.e., greater than five (5) consecutive sick days, not including pre-approved vacation time off) require an employee to go through the University’s leave request process, i.e., FMLA/RIPFML, Disability. Provided however, the requirement of an employee to go through such leave request processes shall not supersede their right to the use of their allotted sick days when they are sick or disabled pending and/or after approval of the leave request. When an employee is on an approved FMLA/RIPFML Leave, no less than half day increments can be used. Full-time employees may use up to twelve (12) days of their current or banked sick leave per year to care for a sick spouse, child or parent. The Union agrees to cooperate with the University to prevent abuses of sick time. Abuse by an employee of sick time shall be grounds for disciplinary action or discharge. In view of this provision for paid sick time, other employees shall assist in covering the duties performed by the employees on sick time. Employees who are on an approved FMLA/RIPFML leave and/or a paid disability leave in accordance with Article XVI.6 of this agreement will continue to accrue sick pay for six (6) months of continuing leave of absence, regardless if said absence crosses benefit years. Employees who are on an unpaid non FMLA /RIPFML/disability leave and which crosses benefit years will receive a prorated sick time allotment based on the month that they return to work on a paid status. Employees who are on a workers' compensation leave in accordance with Article XVI.7 of this agreement will continue to accrue sick pay for twelve (12) months of continuing leave of absence, regardless if said absence crosses benefit years. All sick days a Sergeant is entitled to in the schedule may be taken without the necessity of submitting a doctor's excuse, except, the University may require a physician's excuse in support of any request for sick leave, provided the Sergeant involved has been notified in writing on the occasion of their last prior absence for sickness or injury that such evidence might be required for any future sick leave request. Sergeants may use up to twelve (12) days of their current or banked sick leave per year to care for a sick dependent or seriously ill parent.
