Common use of Recognition of Social Illness Clause in Contracts

Recognition of Social Illness. The Employer and the Union recognize that mental illness, alcoholism, and drug abuse are health problems. Where necessary, accumulated sick leave benefits will be granted for treatment on the same basis as now apply for other health problems. Employees whose partner or dependent(s) is undertaking a rehabilitative program for alcoholism or drug abuse may apply for vacation time or leave of absence without pay to participate in such rehabilitative program. It is recognized by both the Employer and the Union that it is the personal responsibility of the individual to accept treatment. The acknowledgement of the above is not to be interpreted as constituting a waiver of management’s responsibility to maintain discipline, or the right to take disciplinary measures within the framework of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
