Xxxxxxx of Appointments. TAs and GAs whose academic progress and service record have been determined to be satisfactory are eligible for reappointment at the sole discretion of the department, based on the past performance of the assistant, availability of funds and the University’s determination of the need for services. Departments are encouraged to communicate with assistants concerning plans or prospects for new assistantship appointments after the term of their current appointments end. However, a new appointment is not guaranteed unless and until the department issues to the student the notice of appointment described in Section IV D above. Departments have differing policies on the length of time students may hold assistantships and sometimes limit the total number of semesters that an assistant may serve. In accord with the University’s standard of excellence, TAs and GAs must maintain a high standard of performance in their duties, as solely determined by the appointing unit, in order for their assistantships to be renewed.
