Failure modes characterization. Fracture surfaces of broken joints were observed with a binocular magnifier and the images were manually post-processed using the Image J software to assess the relative importance of various failure modes. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM, TM300 Hitachi) was also used to analyse the fracture surfaces. The specimens failure modes were defined following the ASTM D5573 standard [121].
