Case Study Research Method Sample Clauses

Case Study Research Method. In order to answer the research questions of the thesis properly the case study research method seems to be the most appropriate approach. The question can be raised on what basis the researcher should choose between the different research methods. According to Xxxxxx X. Xxx, three factors are relevant in this respect:182 the form of the research question (whether it needs exploratory or explanatory answer), whether the researcher has control over behavioural events and lastly whether the research focuses on contemporary events. For instance, if the research is explanatory – which is indicated by the research question using the how? and/or the why? interrogative – needs control over behavioural events and focuses on contemporary issues, the researcher should use the experimental method. In the case when the research is exploratory (uses who?, what?, where? like questions), there is no need for control over behavioural events and focuses on past events, archival analysis will be the most suitable method. However, if the research is explanatory, examines contemporary events, and the scholar do not have the opportunity to manipulate the relevant behaviours the preferred approach is the case study method. My thesis fits to this situation. Namely, it studies current events regarding European sub-regional MDCs, I cannot manipulate the relevant behaviours of the actors and although my research questions contain both exploratory and explanatory elements, the explanatory part is much more significant. Thus, I use the case study method for my research. 182 Based on these factors Xxx discusses five methods: Experiment, Survey, Archival Analysis, History, Case Study. See in. Xxxxxx X. Xxx, Case study research: design and methods (Thousands Oak: SAGE Publications, 2009), 8-14. In political science the traditional view is that the method of single-case and multiple- case study researches differ. This phenomenon is signified in the names of these types of methods as well, because only the single-case study research is called ‘case study’, and the multiple-case study is mostly called ‘comparative research’.183 In addition, political scientists apply different methods on the basis of the number of the studied cases regarding multiple-case studies, thus they differentiate small-N comparison (2-12 cases) and large-N studies. 184 Contrarily, Xxx argues that ‘case study research includes both single- and multiple case studies’,185 and developed a set of rigorous procedures whi...

Case Study Research Method. Under the qualitative research umbrella, there are a variety of research methods that can be employed to provide an exploration of complex phenomena in educational research settings (Xxxxxxxx, 2003; Freebody, 2003). In this thesis, a qualitative case study research approach was chosen in order to attain an in-depth investigation of Turkish upper primary students’ self and social regulation processes in a naturalistic classroom setting over time (Xxxxxx, 2011; Xxxxxxxx et al., 2007; Xxx, 2003). Supporting this, case study research is generally defined as ‘an empirical inquiry that investigates a contemporary phenomenon within its real-life context, especially when the boundaries between phenomenon and context are not clearly evident’ (Xxx, 2003, p.13). As a qualitative research strategy, it focuses on an in-depth investigation of an individual or a group as an entity over time within authentic settings (Xxxxxxxx, 2007; Yin, 2003). Its use is usually viewed appropriate when the inquiry focus is to answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions to understand complex social phenomena over time (Xxx, 2003). It is also suitable for those research situations which involve many variables of interest, utilise multiple sources of evidence (Stake, 2005; Yin, 2003), and those that employ the prior development of theoretical propositions to guide the collection and analysis of data (Xxx, 2003). Furthermore, because case study research is conducted within a naturalistic setting through using multiple data sources it can provide a rich and holistic understanding of the phenomenon being studied (Xxxxxxxx et al., 2007; Merriam, 1998; Xxxxxx, 2002). Being embedded within a naturalistic, interpretive inquiry, the qualitative case study approach is not concerned with the generalisability of findings to a wider population as in statistical research, but rather it advocates ‘naturalistic generalisation’ by the readers who can assess the relevance of the research findings to new circumstances (Stake, 1988) or ‘analytic generalisation’ in which the research findings are used to inform, build or elaborate upon a set of theoretical concepts, principles or propositions for more general applications in other circumstances (see Xxxxxx, 2011; Xxxxx & Xxxxxxx, 2003; Xxx, 2011). Moreover, since the data of qualitative case studies are constructed through the interactions between the researcher, participants and context, it is important for the foremost to reflect on their own positions and personal pr...
