Educational Course. Upon successful completion, the Employer shall pay 50% of the cost of any course of instruction for an Employee to better qualify to perform his/her job, as assigned and approved by the Chief of Police.

Employees who wish to take job related courses must fulfill the following requirements: The employee must make a written request to the Chief Engineer prior to registering in the course, outlining the details of the course and the reason for proposing to take the course. The request will then be discussed jointly by the Chief Engineer, the employee and the hospital's Personnel Officer. In considering the request, the hospital will take into account, the number of other staff who have completed or are currently taking a similar course and the operational benefit to the plant and employer if this particular course request were to be approved.

Educational Course. On application by the employee, the Employer may, at its discretion, pay the enrolment costs and the cost of books and materials, or a portion of the cost, for employees enrolled in academic or technical upgrading courses approved by the Employer. Such payments will be paid as per City of Courtenay Directive #2800.00.04 (d) dated July 23, 2007. Employees requested by the Employer to attend training shall have all expenses paid, shall continue to receive regular wages while attending, and where educational activity takes place outside of regular work hours, shall receive time off in lieu equivalent to the time of the educational activity taking place outside of regular work hours. The Employer shall give serious consideration to employee requests to attend work-related courses and seminars.

Paragraph shall not apply, if the hospital requires the employee to take the course as a condition of employment. If the employee must be absent from work to write an there shall be no loss of pay, benefits and no reduction of seniority for the hours required to write the examination. employer agrees to facilitate a shift change in order for the employee to write the examination. The hospital in deciding the employee's request, will take into regard, the operational safety of the plant should satisfactory alternate shift arrangements not be possible in allowing the employee to write this exam. The Hospital shall not act unreasonably in both deciding to approve a course request, and in allowing time off to write an examination.
