Speed of Service. I acknowledge that the actual Connection Speed of my Internet Service may vary and depends on a number of factors, such as the location of the Premises, the amount of traffic on the Internet, the ability of my computer to process data, environmental factors, and other factors beyond the control of Xxxxxxxxx. I further acknowledge that no minimum level of Connection Speed is guaranteed by Xxxxxxxxx.

Speed of Service. Luttnerdling and Gather (2013) present a visual representation of maximum service speeds between major European metropolises. This is a slightly different concept to maximum line speed, as it takes the ‘beeline distance’ (the linear distance between two cities, regardless of line route or physical geography) and divides by the time of the fastest available train from timetables on a specfic day (in this case Tuesday the 20th of March 2012). The speeds are calculated in one direction only, although the authors concede that there may be minor errors as slight differences in service quality can be observed in opposite directions between major cities (although this is a fairly rare case). The results of this analysis are presented in Figure 3. Figure 3: Maximum beeline speed of fastest railway connections between major European Metropolises (Lüttmerding and Gather, 2013) When considering station to station speeds, several patterns are visible in the European rail network. Firstly there are several countries with very fast national services. For example Spain has five routes ranked within the highest category for speed (151-219 km/hr), whilst France has four. Both countries also have several national services in the second highest category (101-219 km/h). Other countries with relatively fast services include the United Kingdom, Benelux, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Italy (which also includes several routes in the highest category). By linking services it is thus possible to achieve relatively fast journey times within a national context in Western and Northern Europe. However, the analysis reveals several deficiencies which may prevent rail from competing (or substituting) for air travel over the distances usually associated with this mode of transport. Firstly, there are large parts of Central and Eastern Europe which have relatively low speeds over large distances. Secondly, the fast connections mentioned earlier are disproporiantly national, with very few fast international services. Xxxxxxxxxxx and Gather (2013) identify Madrid-Barcelona, Brussels –Paris, London-Lille and London-Paris as particularly fast international train services. However, clear breaks can be seen, such as the lack of fast train services between Spain and Portugal, Germany and Italy and more generally from Eastern Europe to Central and Western Europe. Together, this indicates a lack of viable subsitition of air journeys by rail over long distances. These difficiences are explained throug...
